Talking First Gen Donor for Ranger

A friend of mine has a First Gen beater with a 12A and 5spd tranny that he is going to sell to me for $200 and it runs excellent! I'm still going to take the engine appart, rebuild it, street port it then toss it in my 89 Ranger that is in need of a motor.... I was just looking to see if anybody has ever heard of this being done...I'm assuming not It's gonna be quite the project
Any thoughts, opinions, and suggestions are welcome.

heh, a modern day REPU. Good luck mounting it up, and you might want to look into ways to increase the torque, Rangers might be small trucks, but they are not light...

I'm thinking about supercharging.....not sure yet. I don't need the truck for pulling anything, just something to drive.

well whatever you do, just know that the Ranger weighs about 1000 lbs more than the RX-7. You might even consider a rear gear swap for the Ranger, there is on the 87 models a 3.96 gear which kicks butt, you can find the codes on the tag which hangs from the pumpkin.

I may have to look into that! I don't know too much about the specs of rear ends and trannys, I just know how to bolt them in.

You ought to look into supercharging. It'll give you more low end grunt than the piston engine did. Sounds like an awesome project!

It origionally had a 2.3 four banger....it had some power, but nothing that would beat any ricer....although I did smoke a late 80s civic once....it was pretty beat up though I was dead set on getting a 2.3 Turbo from a thunderchicken or one of those Merkur Xr4ti's, but then I though about the rotary......
Thats the way its gonna be!
