Electric Fan

Hi Guys,

I need some advices on which Electric Fan I should use on my starlet that now has a 12a rotary stockport. The space is somehow limited and I will need the smallest fan that will keep cool and running with no issues the engine.

I was looking at this one on summit racing:

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

will this one be enough for it ???

Thanks.

CFM is good and amp draw seems realtively low, I'd say OK. Since it's so small in diameter, you should shroud the rad so the fan pulls through all of the core, not just the center.

Thanks for your input trochoid, I kept searching for info regarding this fan and according to the perma-cool site(http://perma-cool.com/Catalog/Cat_page18.html) the CFM for this particular fan is just 900?? Is this too low or still is ok ?

I dont know why summit has listed the CFM different than in the perma-cool's site ?

Oops, not good. You need 2000 cfm+, depending on radiator and engine mods. I had a 1200 cfm fan on my FC. Sucks driving around town in 95*, with the heater on full and still seeing the temp gauge climb. That fan lasted about 3 days before I went back stock. I suspected that your might be over rated due to it's size.

I'd go with this fan.

Ford Taurus fan on low FTW. $12 from a junkyard, and temp didn't climb at Road Atlanta on a 100* day.

Oh I see, well I will take some measures again to make sure the biggest fan I can use in there, there is another little fan in the front that was used to cool the A/C condenser, now the condenser is out because it was in front of the radiator and the radiator will have 2 fans, the little one in the front and the other one in the back I need to decide which one to buy.

Maybe is better to remove the little one in the front and buy something like dual fans with 2.5k cfm ??

What happens if the fan's width is larger than the radiator ? lol can I still install them like that ?

If you build a shroud to contain and manage the air flow, you could run dual fans that are 2-4" wider than the rad. May not look elegant but should work. What radiator are you using? The only auxillary fan I've seen on a 7 is the one on the TIIs with AC. I've never seen specs on those.

I often watch the Sat morning car shows on Spike, they've built some very nice shrouds on custom installs. Wish I had all those tools/machines to play with.

I will post pictures of my radiator later so you can see as long provide some measures, I think is an universal radiator.

I used the dual fans from a MK I MR2 (80s vintage). Someone else has these and only has one hooked up and claims it still cools fine.

I had a small fan in front of my radiator on my autox RX-7. That was a horrible setup. I put the stock fan setup back on - now no worries.

Take trochoids advice and use a shroud such that you pull air through most of the radiator - not just at the area in front of the fan itself.

how about using one fan in the front and one in the rear ? The main problem in my case is the lack of space. I wish I could use 2 dual fans

Ok the radiator is 22 w x 14 h.

This is the fan that is installed in the front of the radiator.

Can I use this one in the front and get another one for the rear ?

As you can see in the first 2 pictures there is not too much space left betweeen the radiator and the engine, the radiator is just thrown in so it might look worst than where it is supposed to go.

Not good to have a pusher and a puller. Pushing is less effective as pulling. Also, it would be best to have a puller, that way you don't have to always have it on when riding on the highway since the air will just hit the fan and bounce around.

Get a ford taurus fan. Put it on low speed and have a 30amp relay. The only thing you need to do is cut the bottom right corner a bit for the lower radiator hose. Best fan out there, and it was 12$ with a warranty from a junk yard. Had that on my car for over a year now, and never gets over 1/3 of the way up the temp gauge, even when on track.

There are many ways to route it up, with a thermostat, through the waterpump housing, switches, ignition, etc. I have it on a switch so I can turn it off on the highway. Tim used a emission switch on the transmission, and it cuts off whenever he is in 4th or 5th gear.

How big is the ford taurus fan ? The issue here is the space really, I believe that my engine needs to sit further in to free up some space as I have seen other starlets with rotaries and they have plenty of room in front of the engine.

EDIT:

Can you please post a link of one of the ford taurus fans you are talking about? I am seeing a lot on ebay but they look very big to me
