Did the pointy-nosed RX-4 ever get to the US (sexy pics inside)?
I know that we had bumperettes and crash bumpers from 74, which means that there are no simple-bumpered RX-4s, but I always see front ends that look like an old Ford LTD or something. Can you swap bumpers onto a US RX-4 and end up with something like this? If so, will someone point me at good car?

I swear, every time I look at this guy's page on cardomain, my wife accuses me of surfing for ****. I wonder where she'd get that idea.....

The Rx-4 coupe benefited from a loophole in the 5-mph bumper regulations which enabled it to go simple-bumpered, as you call it, from it's introduction on these shores until '76 when it got the ugly big grille front treatment. In other words, the US version of the '74-'75 Rx-4 Coupe is exactly as in your pictures...except it did have little bumperettes. But those are easily removable and you end up with what's in your pics. My point is, NO CRASH BUMPERS on '74-'75 Rx-4 Coupes. I had one. Soooo you don't have to worry about swapping anything. Just find a '74-'75 RX-4 Coupe. Also, Coupe parts can be used to convert wagons and sedans to non-crash bumper cars.

Yeap, they are SEXY!!!
That was the RX-4 I was looking for, the pointy nose RX-4 (74-75)
but I had to settle for the Mercury Grill style, like the Australian calls them (76-78) one!
The front end is not as sexy as the early style but the body lines makes up for it!!!LOL.
That black car is off the hook!
Hello Crit, long time not hear from you! welcome back!!

They really don't get their due. A lot of people go ga-ga over Rx-3s but for me, the best looking pre-RX-7 rotary is the '74-'75 Rx-4 Coupe. It looks like a miniature american muscle car. The whole car is really well done styling-wise, except for the rear tail lights, which is really a shame. I don't know what they were smoking when they tacked those things on...They remind me of an ugly ruby ring some fat woman in a trailer park would buy from QVC.
But is this a great-looking car or what?:
I guess one solution would be to get the rear tail-light panel from the '76- Coupe and put that on your earlier car. I can't imagine why it wouldn't fit and it's tail-lights are much more subdued.

I personally like the rear end treatment and most who have come across my car do as well. I agree with the above post. I also find the best pre RX7 cars to be the RX4 Coupe and they dont get the attention they deserve. I think that this is for a few reasons. One, they were heavier than the RX3 so many removed the larger more powerful new 13B's out to swap them into the RX3's for racing. Two, they were expensive for thier time so not many were sold. Four, Not many were sold and few today know what they are or have come across one, as the thread starter. I think there is one for sale here in Quebec. Don't know the owner but I saw a posting on another site. I can check if its still there. I think the asking price was about $6500. The pictures looked as if the car is complete and no rust. The interior looked like it needed some work. It was a manual which is very rare, mine is an auto.
Below is pics of mine not the one for sale. Mine has 33000 original miles.

Me in the Pics?
Hello,
No that is not me in the pics. It is the original owner that I bought the car from last year. She is a car nut and lovingly cared for the car its entire life driving it only on nice days and rarely in the winter unles it was clear. She lost her drivers permit due to failing a test as required where she lives in 2005 and finaly parted with it in 2006. I have rarely driven it myself also only taking it out on nice days.
Here are a few more shots. The car is all original never having any repaint or body work. The white interior is like new and also all original. Even the carpet is new and non faded black.

Here are some interior pics etc...
Here are some more shots. I will try and get some pictures loaded up of after I have cleaned her up, more so than she already was. These are all of when I bought her before anything was done by me. I have kept it all stock and will be leaving it this way.

RX for fun

In the past, I have owned both a 74 and 76 RX-4 (white interior and the door panels were still in plastic!!). Shape and interior wise, it is nicer than a RX-3 BUT it is darned heavy. The hood alone requires much more effort to lift.
Pix of the last quattro but gave it up to my bro.

I agree on the muscle car look. Out of all the Mazda Rotaries the Rx-4 captures that look. I like everything about the Rx-4 including rears lights. The lights are sexy. The only thing like wacky said is the weight.
I gathered data on the internet I do not know if it is accurate, but here is a start maybe we can gather accurate information.
Rx-8 ----------------------3045
Rx-7 Twin Turbo -----------2826
Rx-7 Convertible ----------3045
Rx-7 Turbo ----------------2888
Rx-5 ----------------------2464
Rx-4 Sedan-----------------2620
Rx-3 Sedan-----------------1945
Rx-2 ----------------------2315
R-100 ---------------------1782
Rotary Pickup -------------2865
Miata 1990 ----------------2293
GLC -----------------------1790
Mazda 626 -----------------2530
I can't believe that the Rx-4 weighs more than an Rx-5 can anyone else provide some accurate info?

Thought I would post of photo of the RX4/Luce, Mazda has in their museum in Hiroshima. The sedan pictured looks so much better than the big crash bumpers we saw in North America. This particular car is a custom model (lowest grade) with a 12A motor. The "Gran Turismo" model had the 13B in Japan. This car was also available with a 1800cc motor (same as Ford Courier) everywhere except North America. Called "Luce" (pronounced lou-chay) is was the second generation of this line.

If you think about it, the RX-4 may have been a heavy contender against its other siblings, but its still light by comparison with other modified cars. 'Street cars' to say the least.
Some pics of the 'nosy' beast
The rear tail lights takes some time to warm up to if you don't like it to begin with. A little resto would definitely help someone like the rear tail lights.
