datsun rotary powa!

im new here. ! im a huge fan of rotary power and also a big fan of datsun 510's, so why not hybrid the two.. here are some pics.. wondering if anyone has done this before.. i have a 5 speed mazda rx7 tranny , and 240 rear end... everything is mazda related execpt radiator.. ..volvo radiator. it pushing a 13b and has dual webber carbs..
the bad.. i put a used 13 b in it and after tuning th carb i think i trashed the engine.. Lots of oil in the radiator and well as water in the oil.. so now im up for the rebuild or replacemnt.. I think it got to hot and blew the coolant seals.. So need some advice with this set up.. thanks you guys you all ROCK

Thats a dual throat 48 IDA, not dual weber carb. Looks like a FB master cylinder but no brake booster. If I were you, I will add a mechanical water temp gauge connected behind the water pump housing or t-stat. Overheating? get your radiator rod out. thats all I can think of for nwo.

hey man props Im currently in the works of putting a Rebuilt 13b into an 87 Toyota Corolla SR5. Nickle N' Dimes are hard to come by out here in NC, but that is the car that inspired me to want to swap it into a lighter body, but alas, 510s are nowhere to be found.

Ive always wanted a 510 ever since Superstreet ran an artical about a rotary powered 510 some long time ago (before they started apealing more to ricers) That is a nice setup. How much did the carb and intake cost you if you dont mind me asking? You have a 240sx rear IRS supension in that thing? didnt it come with a solid rear axle?

As far as your engine goes, its probably not too good. I think from what youve told me youve popped a coolent o-ring seal inside of the block. If I were you, Ide bite the bullet, look for a rebuild video(bruce taurentine recomended ) and buy the basic rebuild kit (Rotary Avation sells for roughly $500) and just go and rebuild the engine... being that you bought it used, its probably tired anyway, and youve got to pull it apart to replace the oring anyway. the only other problem is that if youve overheated the engine, youll probably need new rotors and housings and other things aswell, Overheating kills the engine and most times warps it to the point you cant rebuild it.

Leme know if theres anything I can help you with, ill do my best. Also, if you dont feel comfortable rebuilding your own engine, look for Kevin Landers with Rotary Resurection, he's on this board. Very reputable man, knows what hes talking about too

GL man, welcome to the board and nice ride bro

hey thanks

thanks alot i appr it.. the carbs came with the car but i got them rebuilt cost about 2 bills.. i know this guy who is a mad scientist over these things..lol.. but ive looked at new carbs for around 500 or so... i do ave a couple of issues.. wacky racer poitned out that the master cylnd is a FB i could have sworn it was off of a mazda. well i need a brake booster BAD.. so i bought a mazda booster and am wondering what its going to take to hook this up.. also do i have to worry about my calipers, drums, lines etc, to be compatble. i dont wanna rupture anything down the road, if ya know what i mean.. also my heat gauge thread is slightly to big to fit in the water pump housing, dont know if i should drill it to size or if there is an adpater thread of some sort, or just get a mazda heat gauge that fits and rewire the dash so it looks smooth.. hmm? as far as the engine goes im gonna get some dvds , but i have a good mazda mechanic whos gonna look into the engine.. if it is in need for a rebuild i would just rather buy a new one.. also im kinda confused about this radiator rod. what is the purpose of having it and how does it interfear with my setup? (sorry for being so nubish) anyway thanks again.. ill post more pics when i get a chance..

You can use 280zx brake booster/spacer/master cylinder. You can do the same for front suspension and brake calipers.

I dont see any problem with the radiator except if its overheating, it maybe clogged. For the aftermarket water temp, you have to re-tap (3/8 pipe) the exisintg hole in back of waterpump.

Let me know if you need help.

front suspension

hey thanks wacky..
so im also having trouble finding front suspension (spring , shock).. so your saying that a 280 willl fit on a 510. right now the springs are cut and its to low and to hard of a ride.. i need to bring it up (2 inches or so) and have it so a pot hole wont **** my day up.. i found coil overs but that a little excessive and it will remain pretty low i think.. anyway i have the car at mazda specialist in silver lake. seems like a good bunch of people.. had any experience with them let me know.. thanks agiain!

hey lebowitz,
nice car. i'm still in the process of dropping a rotary in my 510, so we'll have a lot in common. my 13b is a street ported 4 port from japan w/ high compression rotors from an s5 engine. i'm running a 48 weber also. tuning the carb isn't too difficult. there are alot of people who can help. pm me if you have specific questions and i'll do my best to help. i've also heard that a vw rabbit radiator works well in the 510.

i am very familiar w/ salazar mazda also. they are good guys, but unfortunately like wackyracer said, their specialty is stock spec vehicles.

surprisingly, there are a lot of parts available for the 510 where you don't need to convert any braking or suspension parts parts to mazda parts unless you really want to.

good luck!

im going to build a full bridge 13B, either turbo or not i haven't decided yet, into my '70 datsun 510 4 door coupe. i was planning on having it done before this coming sevenstock in LA but i am thinking of doing a different project instead prior to the event.

hey

yeah i just got done talking with salazar. The reason i took the car there to begin with was because thre was oil in the radiator. so i took it to him.. he is a great guy, he told me the engine was fine and some more diggin was needed in the coolant system. the other good news is that it has been bridge ported so after all the quarks get address, i then need to focus on the suspension. right now its way to low.. i cant pull into my garage, and im having a tough time finding the front suspension for the 510.. Top end performance said they will do it but its $$$.. so if i could just get my car in my garage id do it myself.. does anyone know of a good way to temporarly raise the suspension, so i can drive it down in my garage.?

Karack: awesome project, id go turbo just cause! lol.. keep my posted with your project i love the datsun rotary projects.. hope to seee you at the event..

rotary510: good luck man i would love to see how yours come out.. please keep me posed. send me some pics if you got em lee_bowitz@yahoo.com.. if you need anything hit me up..

thanks all !

I'll definitely send or post pics when I get a chance. I have pics, but they are at max res, so the files are very big. I still need paint and body so it'll be a while before my dime is on the road.

I missed this one where you stated...oil in the radiator. if I were you, I will look more into it. thats an indication of bad motor.

Lebowitz,
i'm converting the front suspension on my dime to coilovers/280zx brakes so, i'll be selling the stock components when that is done. are you interested in my stock strut/spring and brake setup?

lee,
i'll send you a pic of the front suspension on my dime. honestly, its not in the greatest shape since its been under construction for the past couple of years, but if all you need it for is raising the car up, it'll get the job done. the strut cartridges should be replaced, but the springs are stock height i believe.

got my car BACk!

Hey you guys.. so i got my car back and the engine is fine.. its tempeture is running at peek 210 i think thats kinda of high.. Also he told me i needed a new clutch cylnder but it shift fine before it went in and now it still shifts fine but lets out really high wtf.. i dont get it? so i have to figure out a way to get my temp gauge working. right know i have it cutting into the watercoolant hose before the water housing unit.. its ghetto but works.. i need to know the size of mazda temp gauge threading. hopefully i can get an apadpter to fit..

Now the important stuff..... When i excellerate or take hard turns or brake hard i hear like stone or gravel underneath my car ... i can feel tappping around the center hump inside the car. at first i thought it was suspension but now im pretty sure its the driveline... does anyone have any clues or ideas on wtf it is????
tomroow im gonna get underneath there and get a closer look....

thanks all

le,

I went to see the car when it was for sale and I also noticed the same noise. I believe its because of the motor mounts. I looked under the car and noticed that the tranny mount is there and bolted down. However, the motor mounts are really bad and seems like it has no rigidity. Everytime you hit a bump, it bounces the motor and pivots the tranny making the drive shaft hit the underside of the body. I may be wrong but thats what I saw when I went to see the car. PM me your number if you want to talk about this more.

Thanks
Kenny
