changing your coils
changing your coils
hello all. I have a 72 RX2 coupe thats all stock, as most of you probably aready know. well what all do i need to put in blaster2 coils?
and i have been hearing bits about using 2nd gen rx7 coils. any thoughts on what the deal is with that, cause i have a set of those laying around too. Thanks Matt22

I didn't actually know that you had a 2, but anyway... It might be better to ask this sort of a question in the 1st gen section because you're basically in the same situation as '79 RX-7 owners with their points distributors.
Does your 2 still have dual dizzies? If so, you have some options to go direct fire with simultaneous firing on leading. If it's got a newer front cover ('74 and up) you can use a 1st gen dizzy and go with DLIDFIS, 2GCDFIS, MSD-DIS etc. All my old school Mazdas which previously had points now have DLIDFIS with FB dizzies and they run very well.
Suince you have a set of 2nd gen coils, may I ask which ones they are? IF you have the leading coil (the one with dual outputs), you can use one J-109 or GM HEI ignitor and the stock ballast resistor (located down inside the base of the coil holder) and it will work pretty good. It's what several 1st gen guys are running. I also have a 2nd gen leading coil but haven't had a chance to test it on a running vehicle yet (only bench tested it so far, and the results were good). I may get that chance soon though.

ya mine still has the twin dizzy. I am trying to figure it all out even though i havent put much wrench time into getting the car to run yet. the i have both the leading and trailing coils from a 88 GTU. I know the 2nd gen coils i have worked perfectly when i took them off. so theres no concern there. Just the whole wireing and setup part. Thanks for all the info. Matt22
