1981 626 with a rotary?

I recently purchased a 1981 Mazda 626. 2.0L RWD . I was wondering if a 12a rotary engine would fit into my car. Thanks in Advance.

yes, it will fit just fine and you can beat cocky Rx-7 drivers that snub their noses at a rotary 626 ...

(kinda like what that 626 driver did to me in the Bronx many years ago ...)

Keep the 626 rear end it should work fine for up to what, 250hp? Doesn't a 1st gen limited slip and gears fit in there too? You'd want at least a 3.90 if not shorter. Gearing really helps the rotormotor rev up.

You should use the 626 gearbox since it is semi-close ratios that work real well with a rotary. Swap the bellhousing out for a 1st gen one. And grind down the splines of the input shaft about 1/2" so it will stay in the pilot bearing. Just search "626 rwd" we've posted that mod on a thread b4.

Good luck, cool little car.

There used to be one around Highland Park back in the early '90's. Always wanted one. It is getting hard to find an old 626...and 323's for that matter!

^^^ The second last one in the pics above (the red one with RX 6 plates) is from my local club.

He runs a nice 13B bridgie that always turns a few heads...
