Fired up the Haltech. Had one wiring problem, but I got it fixed. Time to pull the engine now. I want to fire the engine before I start worrying about wiring the rest of the car. So, I made a quick ignition/starter box.

 

HAHAHA so does it run???

 

Not yet. The engine has been sitting open way to long to risk starting it without going through it first. Work has been ridiculous lately, but ought to return to normal after today. That'll give me more time to work on the car. Shouldn't be long now..........hopefully.

With all your skills building, I'm positive you could build a rotary engine. They are really easy to build. Just buy one of the many build dvd's. Anyone can do it with little mechanical knowledge and skill.

 

Never mind the previous statement about work getting back to normal. Lately it's 70 hrs/week minimum. No overtime either. Ahh, the beauty of being salary. But I digress............Made a little more progress on the car. Dash is in and wired. There are three more gauges in the center fiberglass gauge thingy I built before that still need to be finished. It houses the fuel level, water temp, and oil temp.

When I was wiring the analog outputs of the two EGT gauges, I forgot to put in one of the resistors that changes the output to the ECU from differential current to 0-5V. Turns out 21 Volts on a 0-5V input cooks the Haltech. Who knew? Haltech was really cool and said they would cover it under waranty. Only problem is that I want to connect to the ECU and check the sensor signals (CAS, TPS, Temps, etc) before pulling the engine. Going to set me back a couple of weeks.

 

man, I would like to have this ride. I would have several camera setup to tape everyone who come over to look under the hood.

Wow great build. One comment I would like to make about your map sensor position. From the picture it looks like it is under UIM on top of the motor. I would really look into moving it to a vertical position. It should be mounted on the firewall and above the highest point in the plenum to prevent fluids from riding up. Also sensor accuracy will be affected in a horizontal position. The heat from under the UIM may also slightly affect it as well. Other than that great build so far. I have always wanted to take a 67 corvette stingray and do a Peripheral ported 20b swap.

 

This has inspired me to start my newest project to add to the piston < rotary swaps...

this is soooo awsome dude I wish I had your skills I am doing my miata rotary swap in my garage and I feel sooo stupid now..I have sleepless nights being pissed at myself for not being more skilled at fab work...nothing is as neat as I would like, and I get frustrated to get it done!!!!!! i have seen you and DELSLOW works and i get more pissed with myself..................................but it will be sweet when you get it done dude.....keeep us posted..my car is alomost done maybe a week again....cant wait , i can only emagine your self

 

It's very flattering that you put me in the same league as DELSLOW. Personally, I think his skills are a step above mine, but thanks anyway. Don't get down on yourself. I feel the same way about almost everything I make. For example, on the oil pan, the outer welds should have been done with about 20 more amps of current to make the dabs more uniform and blend into the base metal a little more evenly. I almost made the damn thing a 5th time. Good lord.....I went through four itterations of the gas tank to get something I finally liked. Dis-satisfaction with the quality of everything you make is what will drive you to try and constantly get better (and will drive you nuts).

Two years ago, I realized I would never be as good of a fabricator as I wanted to be (still not) just making my own parts in the garage. I just couldn't get enough experience that way. Turned out that a buddy of mine down the street was in the process of starting his own fabrication shop. I asked him if I could start helping him on nights and weekends. So I helped for free for a couple of weeks. Then, I started getting paid to do it. Now, I'm ALMOST as good of a hand as he is. Bottom line.....there's a lot of frustration and a whole lot of practice behind what looks easy in a couple of forum pictures.

It sounds like you have the right mindset to be really great at fabrication, so just keep with it.

 

thanks alot for the encouragement.....but of course you havent seen my weld quality..LMOL.....i need to get a welder instead of that borrowed one..lol but yea I will be doing some practice in the future and will be investing in a good welder one day...but you keep it going dude i cant wait to see it running........

Talked to Haltech and the e8 should be back this week. In the mean time, I installed the gas tank, filled the diff with fluid, ran the fuel lines and brake lines, put in the parking brake, and installed the carpet and drivers seat.

 

Won't be long now!!!!
