1973 RX2 24 Hours of Lemons Project

Our 24 Hours of Lemons Team has in our possession a totally roached out 1973 RX2. It is far beyond restoration - but would make a fantastic 24 Hours of Lemons Car.

The car still has its original complete drivetrain and its interior. Most of the exterior has either been wrecked, vandalized, or is rusted through.

Our plan is to sell off the interior bits, remaining glass, unusable drivetrain components to someone interested in using them for a restoration project. The rest of the car will be used as a race car in the 24 Hours of Lemons.

Basically we want to turn the RX2 into something like our other terrible race cars:

No, we wouldn't be painting over the fantastic patina and rust on the RX2 -just adding a rally stripe and numbering the car.

Realiziing that some of the drivetrain and suspension/brakes on the RX2 are likely going to be unusable due to age and neglect, we are looking for tips and hints as to what will easily transpose RX7-wise onto the RX2.

SO, we are calling on the group's expertise, suggestions, cat-calls, and jeers to try and make this project work - and on the cheap!

Anyone see some RX2 gold in the pics that could be sold off to finance the project?

What kind of RX7 suspension and drivetrain components (year/model) play well with the RX2 (little or no fabrication)?

TX Help the cause..

I have a few take off parts, from the Fd willing to donate. Stock fuel system ,radi and I'm sure a few more lost in the garage. Let me know if any of this will help out, been saving for local members in need. I'd just like a warm up drive, in the new lemon. .... LMK ..1Tx.

While I not sure if any parts are one for one interchangeable, but I do like your project. With minimal cutting and welding and if you can keep the rear end in the RX-2 you could drop the RX-7 drive line in and just cut the drive shaft to make up the difference. As for motor/tranny mounts you can just mate them up as you go. The braking will be an issue. Based on the condition and amount of time you have, you could just remove, clean and reuse the major brake system components. I would change hard lines, replace all software (Master/wheel cylinder rubber) , flex lines, pads, slap it together and bleed the **** out of it. I have also just kinked the back line and used a fresh front only. Saved me a ton of time and the hand brake still worked! Good luck, and let us know how you make out. Very cool.

^^^ It was in a garage that was falling down around it.

Whatever cash from its bits we can scrounge will go into purchasing a cage for it and into making it run/drive/stop; on its own power. And - YES we will take freebies and nearly freebies in donations towards the project!

Ive gotten several PM's for parts on the car and we're not yet ready for a for sale thread. Main problem in not having a for sale thread already is that we don't know what this stuff is worth. Soooo - all this asking us how much for this or how much for that - well, we just don't know yet.

Purpose of THIS thread is for ideas to make the car look terrible (done!), handle well, and hopefully haul ***! We would really like the car to end up surprisingly quick and competitive. Allll on a budget.
