It sounds like you have a GSL SE trans or similar, and that you have hooked up to the "over-top" (5th gear) switch rather than the reverse switch.

The 5th gear switch is up on the right, the reverse switch is lower on the left (USA drivers side) and may have red wires.

I believe it is a 1980 5 speed trans the switch has no wires on it just two bullet style prongs that come straight out of the sensor like the Rx2 transmission switch . It's located on the left side of the tail shaft (driver side) 5th gear switch is on the top left (driver side) of bell housing behind the slave . Both switches react in the same matter on shut off light in 5th.

Got my reverse light issue figured out transmission had three switches and the owner had removed the reverse switch since he was having clearance issues .......... 30 min a hammer and a reverse switch later and it works !!! Don't try this at home I recommend sourcing out a Rx2 -Rx3 transmission if you can ( it will fit inside the narrow tunnel ) lol but now WTF is the sensor on the tail shaft housing for ??????

Thanks Tonka I figured out the problems the rx2 wiring was to different to use basically the only wires that were the same were the ones that I already had wired so I ended up having to trace the rest of them back and few wires I had to eliminate which were for the alternator regulator since the new one has one built in
