wow i got fuxored

well to all of you that i know, my rotary days may be limited, on the great day of saturday, at 79k miles on the body and motor(original in both cases)......my FD decided to throw an apex seal after a small "cough." as of now, my FD is dead in the water infront of my friends house and is waiting to be towed. i have no idea exactly what i'm going to do, but thoughts of rebuilds, V8 swap, and just selling the car are going through my head....help me decide what to do

what kind of fuel mods did u have? and how much boost were u running??
mods with out proper fuel modifications, are the leading cause of premature engine failures.... and its quite easy to blow up an FD engine with just a full ehxuast system... since its a map based system.

your setup might be fine, so dont take this the wrong way, but better to be safe.

but just double check before you drop another motor in and wind up with a blown motor again... (ive seen it happen to alot of people)

Man that sucks hella bad. Well if you sell it then you will loose a ton of money on it and I would actually buy it from you and put my engine in it. Im very serious about that too so let me know if you do sell it. If you rebuild thats anywere from $4,000 to $6,000 if a shop like atkins, or pineapple does it. Which are the only two I would suggest. If you go V8 Swap or Supra engine swap it around $10,000 to $12,000 so i've heard at least. If you do decide to rebuild let me know and I can help you remove the engine as I have had to do it so many times its not even funny. Man just when we were getting more cool FD owners another one goes down this blows.

Not an everyday fc you know what im saying. + if you rebuild think of how long that car is going to last ya if you take care of it. shop around and get some qoutes!

Stock 13brew rebuild is like $3200 with a core from Pineapple, even less if its just a rebuild of your core...

LS1 Engine, tranny, wiring, ecu, $4500
$1200 subframe kit
$600 Radiator, fuel pump, shifter, Battery relocal, and misc...
No labor of course. But around $6.5k

Well maybe I was off a little but when I got my motor rebuilt rob said it would be around $6,000 dollars. So its best just to call and ask I guess. Also all the guys that have done LS1 swaps oon this forum have said that it costs around 10 grand so sorry if I wqas listening to people who had actually done it.

I have a LS1 93 Montego Blue in the driveway.
Not to mention I have built a 20b 87 Turbo II and rebuilt a ton of motors.

Rob always tells people who are asking him a thousand questions and wasting his time a higher price. Im at his shop every other week...

thxs for all the feedback people. i'm debating on weather to just use this an excuse to buildup a better 13b-rew (with better fuel mods btw, i'll be a lil more careful this time) but the whole LS1 swap is pretty attractive.....eh, well i'll shop around and see, i'll keep ya'll posted on what kinda buildup i'll do. till then i'm rollin round in a 93 toyota corolla

uh, just a quick question, for "the spyder." i've looked up some swap info on the forums and what not, but i just want to know from you, as another FD owner, how smooth was the V8 swap process, and do you think its worth it? (sorry for being so broad with questions) lastly, did you do the swap yourself or have someone do it?
to the rotards i know, i'm not givin up on the spinning triangles, i just wanna know what my options are, i love the power delivery and uniqueness of the rotary format to give it up so easily.

long term, the V8 swap makes a lot of sense. if you do it yourself you gain a lot of knowledge and will know your car more than you ever thought possible. in some cases, it can increase the saleability. power, torque, reliability, efficiency, amazing handling, all in a very nice package. it is without doubt a lot of work, but being that it's been done many times and is very well documented, many parts are available to help make it easier (at a price) as is a large base of knowledge to help out..... (v8rx7forum). long term you can beat on an LS1 based engine pretty hard for a very long time and still have the same if not more power over a broader range.... (yes there are some exceptions) if you take care of it and do a good job on th install, it will likely last longer than the car.

remember, if you go this route, you have some parts to sell to help cover some costs too....

good luck whatever route you choose.

careful marc, don't be quoting prices for a shop that you don't own,or work at.

Dude, what's up with you,Rob has set prices for basic rebuilds, and adjusts according to the customer's specific desires,HP goals etc.

there's a lot more in misc stuff.... if you want exhaust, AC & PS still. it's easy to dump $300-600 on the fuel system alone just in parts.... trust me on this, it adds up quick

I have over $7k in mine after getting the engine costs down to $1200 by selling off parts from the donor cars. but i'm not the perfect example, I have everything and more to put a nice cam in, have a race built trans & converter(original trans was bad) and bought lots of stuff that I didn't need or changed directions mid-swap.

Han Tim thirds this motion to rebuild your REW. It's a more priceless look on a dude's face when you tell him it's only a 1.3l engine

Han, what caused it? You're car isn't that heavily modded iirc... Just a dp and catback? How much boost were you seeing when driving on a regular basis?
