Well I am glad I got rid of Gregs' old car...

The thing has been nothing but problems since I sold it. The latest one: I think the tranny is blown.

The story goes is the gal I sold it to was driving up a hill in 5th, and decided to downshift. She says she couldn't get it into gear, so she pulled over and turned the car off. Ok, whatever. Then she couldn't get it to start.

So she has it towed to my house

It's flooded as hell. It won't start, same symptoms as last time. (This is the night before easter, btw) So I decide to try to tow start it with the truck.

It's raining, and cold, and miserable. We take a couple laps around the block, which took a while since Karla didn't quite understand the mechanics of towing a car. I couldn't get it started, and couldn't hear anything because of the rain, and my growing frustration.

I park the car and leave it in my back driveway. Don't touch it all easter day.

So today, I decide that I shouldtry starting it again. BTW the battery is dead now... from her trying to start it. So I charge the battery up, and get it ready to tow.

Karla takes off, and I let the clutch out. Nothing happens, the tranny is in 4th gear, but it sounds like something is rubbing. The engine is not turning at all.

So I put it up on the lift. I can't really see anything that looks out of place, but I can put it in gear, and turn both rear wheels with no effort. What would you all say? Blown tranny?

If the tranny is blown, is it worth it to find another tranny to stick in there? Would it be possible to find a cheap tranny, and if so, what is cheap? Would it be more cost effective to junk yard it and sell the motor and all working components?

Help me out here, from the perspective of someone who bought the car as a daily driver. What would be the best course of action?

Oh, BTW she drives it really hard. Continuous 3-4000 RPM clutch dumps and generally crappy driving. Yey.

sounds more like a bad clutch to me. most of my bad transmissions have made nasty noises when they turn. does the shifter work when going through the pattern?

In my experience, clutches don't just die, they fade out over time... unless the hydraulic clutch system is screwed up. The pedal still feels like it has some pressure... unless Mazda is gay and has a big spring to pick the pedal back up...

How exactly does the clutch system in the Mazda work? Off to the Chiltons...

Yup... needs new clutch... they're around 100 bucks at motion in Airway hights... with military discount. Don't bother calling around. I already have. That's the cheapest place.

when you do 3-4000 dumps, it just goes one day. I've had it happen.

a mazda clutch operates off of black magic, practiced by gnomes under a bonsai tree on a desk in hiroshima.

This gal is the one I sold the car to for $1000, so because of my guilt over ripping her off so bad, I am attempting to help her repair it. It's my fault, since I am a bighearted yeti. Plus, a couple people on this board have seen her, she's not exactly bangable. Seriously... no amount of Viagra would help.

Would a 1st gen tranny work in a second gen car? Sorry for all the noob questions...

Do I WANT to help put in the clutch? honestly, no... it's a big pain in the ***. It's her fault for driving it like that. Don't let yourself feel responsible.

I'll help, but I don't really want to... should have time on saturday. Really need beer for this one. And you shouldn't do it for free. IT'S HER FAULT.

Oh, you'll want her to order the clutch today, cause sometimes they don't have them in stock.

Oh, and I saw this woman... she scared me. Think Jabba the Hut. (going with the whole Star Wars theme here.)

I'm going to talk to this particular person... and tell her that this is the last repair that I can do for her. I seriously walked her through driving a stick shift... I told her how to do it, and she said "This is how I drove my Taurus, it worked great until the engine died"...

I'm pretty frustrated. There's a case (24 pack) of beer in this for anyone who wants to hook me up... It will come out of the money she paid me for the car.

it's always easy to tell someone to stand up, but i find that it is difficult when the person you sold something to is saying that she needs the car to get to work. that being said it needs to end and I agree with everyone else. But if som broad starts cring on my doorstep over a car I sold here while the rain beats down... I would have to atleast suggest a mechanic and help her tow the car.

Well, after talking to my wife (the eternal pessimist) about this, and she has convinced me to tell the gal that bought the car that it will take tools/expertise that I don't posess, and furthermore, since the damage was caused by neglect/misuse, she needs to get it replaced on her own dime. I'm thinking the bill with professional work will be upwards of $400. She will probably just want to sell the car.

Anyone interested in a '87 RX7?
