WA emissions laws

Ive been throwing around the idea of selling my car recently but I kinda remember hearing/reading that your car has to be emissions legal to sell?

I have it registered up at my gramma's house on Friday Harbor so it doesnt need to pass the sniffer. Do I need to throw a cat on before I sell it, or can the next owner deal with it? I would assume I can sell it as is, but better to know sooner than later.

Technically yeah you would have to throw the cat back on to sell it. But its not like the cops or the state is going to show up on your door if you don't. So basically its up to you and the buyers discretion. I know we don't have any smog inspections over here on the E. side of Wa, I don't think they have them over there either since we are in the same state. If it were me I would let the buyer know and then sell it as is.

yeah the only visual inspection that would take place would be at a certified shop if you were trying to get a waiver

You don't "need" to sell the car with emissions but when registration times comes...you better get it fixed.

It's even year vehicles this year for smog inspection so if it's a '94, better get it handled.

Also, some banks require you to get an emissions check if you're getting a loan with them(state law). I forget if it's only for out of state vehicles but something to consider.

Good luck.
