Steve Kan Tuning Day

I have been talking with Steve Kan over the last week to see about getting him in back to the NW. In addition to this I have also spoken with a few forum members about tuning their cars. We need 5 cars w/ deposit before Steve is willing to come out.

Bio:

For those that have not heard of Steve Kan here is a little bio from his website:

Steve Kan is one of the most renowned car tuners in the world. He has tuned countless vehicles using name brand aftermarket fuel management systems. He has evolved his own skills and methods tuning rotaries, and piston engines. Click Here to read what people have to say.
Steve started his tuning journey in 1995 from his personal vehicle. After success with his car, along with many others who wanted his tuning ability services, he started making a name for himself in the rotary community. In 1998 he teamed up with Rotary Performance, and launched his professional racing career. Since then he has opened his own performance facility in Fort Worth, called Gotham racing, and travels all over within the United States providing tuning services.
“Many people ask how I came up with the shop named Gotham racing. The answer is very simple. My race car was nicknamed the "Bat Mobile " at the tracks and local street scene.”
Steve earned a degree in BSEE (Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering) and has a wealth knowledge with electronics and programming. In college, he was involved with the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) program as a hardware designer for the engine management system. This, among other things, is what makes Steve one of the best Rotary and Piston tuners in the world.

Tuning costs:

$350 - Stock Turbo up to 12psi of boost (pump gas only) 1 map
$400 - Aftermarket Turbo up to 16psi of boost (pump gas only) 1 map
$450 - Aftermarket Turbo from 16psi - 25psi of boost (race gas and/or auxiliary injection only) 1 map
$600 - Aftermarket Turbo up to 25psi of boost (pump gas and race gas tune) 2 maps

On all tuning sessions there is a Non-refundable $200 deposit.

Additional costs will be applied for dyno time. Dyno time will be $85/hr. Most tunes take anywhere from 1-3hrs.

Schedule:

I would like to give people an ample amount of time to get their cars ready. I would also like to ensure that there is a sufficient time gap between this tuning session and the tuning session held last June. I feel that a time that would accommodate both would be in the end of September. I am open to suggestions however. Once we have decided on a specific date I will coordinate with Steve. Please vote on a date and a back-update to ensure that we can get a slot with Steve.

Location/Dyno type:

Depending on the amount of cars we might rent the dyno for 2 days. In order to book the dyno I need to gauge interest. Dyno time will most likely be spent at Horsepower Connection in Olympia. It is a 2 wheel Dyno Dynamics dyno rated for 2400hp. It also has the ability to do steady state tuning which provides a large advantage for the tuner.

Additional information:

For more information, media or testimonials please go to Steve’s website:
www.SteveKanTuning.com

For local tuning session held this year please visit this thread:

Questions:

If you have any questions please send me a PM. I will be coordinating the event. Also all of the people that I have talked with that are still interested in getting a tune please PM me or comment in this thread.

I hear that Steve Kan is seven feet tall, and has arms like tree trunks!

I once heard he killed a man just to watch him die!

Fear and respect Steve Kan!

^ ha... don't know. Never met him. Maybe Steve wants to chime in.

Looks like we have 3 possibly 4 people. Once we hit 5 I will start a formal list.

It's possible depending on when this goes down that I would be 100% willing to make the drive and be a part of this. Problem is, I wouldn't be availiable to do something like this until November.

What all do you need to have done before he comes? We will be running this late Sept or Early Oct. If you are serious I am sure that you could make it.

Yes, we are talking a wait of about 2 months out. I thought that this would give people enough time to clean up loose ends. Plus I am sure that there are people that will need to break in motors. Myself included. Are you in then?

I've been reading the posts for months and I never wrote anything but this time I have to say something. On may 19th we had Steve come to Montreal for a tuning session for 5 single turbo fd3s. Out of 5 engines tuned, 3 have blown up. I was the first one to go with Steve, my car had 3000km(1900miles) on a brand new ported engine and it was running great. I had 95 of compression the day before. We went on the highway to tune the car even though he never asked me what kind of set-up I had under the hood??? We did 5 pulls and then I noticed that the car was running awful on idle. Steve agreed and we went back to the shop....the car now had 60 of compression and would never start when hot. I had the engine inspected and the springs were almost flat and the seals were curved so they couldn't seal properly. Diagnostic : extreme heat probably because I went to lean for a short time. So 25 minutes , 5 pulls and 1000$ of repair for 450$..what a deal!!

The other 2 guys have rear rotor with 0 compression!! So good luck to you guys!!

sWhen he came to portland last month. We were ten for ten. Across the board everyone seem quite happy. He even tuned one car on his way to the airport.

Were the other two engines that lost compression recent rebuilds. IMO rebuilds seem to go out at an alarming rate.

Hes not that expensive in relationship to ground zero. I paid Ralph 430 bucks for a tune that took three hours, and I couldn't even watch. After wards the car ran pretty good with a few issues. Hit 240 at 8 psi. Steve on the other hand charges a flat fee. NOT HOURLY. I paid 400 bucks for about two hours worth of work. I hit 270 at 8 psi. and Steve work out some issues I had and the car is a lot smoother down low. Price is relative, you get what you pay for.

If you can't afford a pro tune, obvisouly you must be able to afford a rebuild, because that is usually the road you go down. You have the opportunity to hire the best tuner around, for the same you would pay someone locally to tune your car. The man probably tunes 30-40 cars a months, that experience is priceless. If we can find someone cheaper and better please let me know I will spend my money there.

i hear yea. little feedback never hurt. i tune afr's on my car just fine im looking for someone with rotary ignition timing experience. im sure he has plenty. my base hitman map for my e6k runs very conservative timing...so not having a "pro tune" will not lead me down blown engine ave...it will lead me down gay engine efficiency ave.

That sounds good. For the price of a good wide band set, to tune afrs you can pay for a pro tune. Six of one half a dozen of the other. Tuning igniton is the X factor, few and far between seem to be able to do this successfully. I can tune afr's via my LM-1 and datalogit, but I will still have to pay for igniton timing. Plus it helps resale

yessir.

any idea how much advance your running from 3000-5500RPM full throttle?

gas mileage, power, street ability all get better with good ignition timing, definitely.

gotcha, let me know if you will be ready in time.

Marcus, Steve is cheaper than any other tuner out there. I have been quoted 600-800 consistently.
