Make sure the small wire is clipped to the starter solenoid.

But would that cause my fuel pump to not turn on?

Well after you do the chicken dance make sure to check your fuses and fusible links. My FB was doing that to me on occassion and it was because of a battery terminal. I got reid of the problem by getting a rubber boot to cover my positive battery terminal and also by rotating my battery around so that the negative is closest to the headlight motor and the positive is by the coils. Try that before you start digging into wiring.
Good luck.

why not just run a new 12 volt lead to the fuel pump from one of the coils... use a relay of course

That is what a parts car is for... I had a similar problem but it was just the battery cable came undone.

put a temp jumper wire from the positive battery post to the positive stud on one of the coils.
see what happens
remember that you can't shut off the car with the jumper in place
