I just looked at RPNW.org, and the drive isn't the 29th, its the 22nd? What gives?

I've been planning on the 29th?

The web site is wrong: It's the 29th. The 22nd is Sevenstock in Irvine, CA.

I don't have an estimate from Rob as to when my car will be ready (seeing as how I'm dropping it off Friday)...sooo, I'm guessing I will need to navigate if someone is willing. If not, I might have to miss this one. No biggie either way though. Maybe you can ask Rob and he might have a better idea if I will be transporting myself or not.

Count me in.

Also do you know yet where you will be stopping for lunch in Newport? I'm in corvallis and can just meet up with the convoy there.

Okay, we are meeting up at 9:00am at the Fry's parking lot in Wilsonville, OR. Leaving at 9:30am sharp. There is a McDondald's in the same lot, so get some breakfast and/or coffee there. We will hand out instructions at that time. If you are late, you won't have them. However, we will be having lunch at the Rogue Ale Public House in Newport at about 12:30pm, if everything goes to plan. We will hit Manzanita around 5pm, so those camping have time to set up camp while there is still light and those of you returning home have time to do that as well. Joe and I are sharing a room...I think at the Spindrift, but I don't recall exactly since he made the reservation. All the motels are pretty close together, so it won't be a problem getting together for diner and hanging out afterwords.

Any chance of posting the map on here so if we get a late start we aren't left out out in the dark? If I can come I'll be coming from Seattle so 9 am is pretty early, I'd have to leave Seattle by 6 or 6:30 unless I want to spend Friday night in Portland.

I won't post a route because it will encourage people to show up late and to some extent detract from the surprise. It would also open up a debate about alternate routes which I do not wish to get into. The route is set. We have driven it a couple times, timed it, ensured there was no contruction or really bad sections of pavement, etc. There will be no improvisation of the 'official' route at this point, though you are free to split off and do your own thing after you show up. However, since you are driving a long way and can't be sure of the rendevous, I will PM you some basic directions so you have an idea where to go. Sound reasonable?

Thanks Blake. Hope to see you guys this weekend. For general info, rooms are getting kind of scarce out there.

No problem. Half the people never make it anyway, especially if the event starts early. If your plans change again, you are welcome to just show up. We don't need an exact head-count. And if you can't get a room or camp site, driving back to Portland the same evening is always an option.

The drive looks to be about 225 miles on Saturday, is that accurate? Sunday about the same?

To be honest, I don't recall the mileage but that sounds just about right. Basically, we are going from Wilsonville to Dallas to Newport and up to Manzanita. The back roads in places adds some mileage but not enough to worry about. Perhaps as much as 250 miles.

Thats perfect! I finally can put some mileage/break in on the new motor. Hopefully I'll have at least 1500mi so I can finally get it dyno'd & tuned. My gas mileage sucks right now. I can only imagine my gas bill for the trip, but hey it'll be fun.

After discussing it with Bill White, we have decided to give out the detailed directions and maps in advance. We want everyone on the same page so people don't get lost if separated from the group. Separation is just a fact of life when you are dealing with passing situations on these roads. I will be working on the route maps and try to have something ready to download by Thurdsay.

A reminder: by participating in this event you accept that we (RPNW, Bill White, Myself, etc.) are not responsible for your actions. If you break down, wreck, get a speeding ticket or whatever, that is entirely your responsibility. The route is a suggestion for reaching various destinations. We do not condone speeding, wreckless driving, littering, etc. but we do not regulate any of that either. What you do, you do as an individual. Hopefully that is crystal clear.

I just got a room in Wilsonville at the Holiday Inn for Friday night....freebie no less. Knew those reward points would come in handy sometime. No worries about being late cause I'll only be about 3 miles from Fry's.

Actually gonna add a day to my trip cause I'm taking an indirect route to Portland through Mt Rainier National Park, down to Carson and westbound along the Columbia River into Portland. Think I'll leave Seattle about noon Friday.

Sunday I'm guessing we'll go north to Astoria, right? At that point I'll probably split off and go on up to Aberdeen and across to Olympia.

Anybody else coming from the Seattle area?

Astoria is not in the plans. We are heading inland from Manzanita, up 53 to 26, then up 103 to 202 to 47 until Clatskanie on HWY 30, right there on the Columbia. We will disband there and you can just cross at Ranier to get to I-5.

At this point, I am not sure how many people will show up. About half the list has contacted me and said they can't make it but there may be just as many people just show up out of the blue. The weather, I think, will also play a factor in participation. Anyway, I am sure of at least four cars and if that's all that shows up, it will at least lessen the stress of organizing a rag-tag bunch of cars. However, it would also be unfortunate for those missing out and will certainlly affect our decision to hold future events of this sort due to all the planning and coordination involved. There was a time our club could put out the word and get 25+ cars eager to show up. I am thinking all the hard-core enthusiast gave up on the club scene or moved on to other cars. I would like to be proven wrong on that point, however.

Here is an overview map of the route. I also created a route book PDF with the route broken down into 11 stages, each with a detailed map. Contact me if you want a copy in advance. I will bring several hard-copies to the rendezvous but the only way to ensure you get one is to confirm you are coming, so I know how many to print...or ask for the PDF and print your own. The PDF is 10mb, btw, so be sure your email account can handle it.

The green symbols indicate planned stops. The Yellow circles are just highlighting waypoints. There will be an additional unmarked, optional stop at the Tillamook Cheese Factory or the Air Museum (Bill is going to the Cheese Factory, I am going to the Air Museum). The stop in Blodgett is just to get everyone together before detouring on Route 180. The stop in Newport is for lunch. The stop in Manzanita is for dinner and the overnight stay. The stop at Camp 18 the following day is for lunch. Then we disband at Claskanie.

Thumbs up

Thanks RPNW! That was great! Hopefully by the next drive I'll be able to keep up with you guys. Hey I just calculated my mileage on my rebuild & I have 1869mi on it......Boy was I way off thinking I had 1100mi on it. The whole trip I was trying real hard to keep it out of boost due to the break in (4psi was the highest I got).
Well anyway I had a great time...sorry Bill for holding you up.
For all guys that missed out....you really did miss out. I hope RPNW will do another drive next year.
Tks Joe
