Temperature around that time might be cooling off but if weather permits are there any places along the coast that would allow camping?

Bill came by with maps of the route and it looks like it will be fun! We will be leaving from the Wilsonville area (not sure where yet), heading down through Dallas, across into Newport for lunch and up to Manzanita for the overnight stay. Lots of fun roads you might not normally drive. We will work up maps and directions for the trip, so everyone knows the route and we don't have to worry about getting separated. Sunday will be the return day, but it's just a drive back on 53 (fun) to the 26 (blah)...if you want to hang out on the coast or head back another way, that's cool too. Bill and I will probably stay to play a round of golf at Manzanita.

Sweet Manzanita. I got a place to stay there.

I just got back from testing the route and it should be a fun drive if the morons that drive 20MPH _below_ the speed limit stay home! There were a few times I wanted to tear my hair out waiting for an opportunity to pass so I could just drive the speed limit. Anyway, I think we found a few good roads that are fun at any pace and some that are not as exciting unless you are traveling a warp speed, as well as the usual assortment of roads that just get you from point A to point B. What we will do, since keeping a large group together is difficult with limited passing opportunities, is have meeting points along the way to collect back together and go on from there.

I checked out the Nehalem State Park & Campgrounds this morning, too. You can pitch tents, as well as bring RVs, which I wanted to be sure of. And they have Yerts to rent out, which are a bit more comfortable and convenient than tents. I will have to look into what those cost. Renting a camp-site for a tent or RV is $20 and that includes parking one car and the day-use fee for the park ($3/day). The site is right next to the beach, so it is hard to beat. The motel I stayed at in Garibaldi (Comfort Inn) was ~$130/night, for contrast.

If you golf, let me know, because Bill and I will be hitting the links at Manzanita. I just played there this morning and had a great time. The park/campsite/beach has horseback riding, which may be of interest to some people. And, in Tillamook, there is the Air Museum (inside the largest surviving wooden structure on the planet -- a WWII blimp hangar) and of course the Cheese Factory. Just let me know what sites/activities you want to see/do and I will see if we can build time for them.

Might I suggest an alternate route, less Winnebago’s and also great fun? Ends up the same place with less traffic? HWY 22 that cuts across from DALLAS to HEBO, down the coast to Lincoln city for lunch and casino, then up the coast again to Tillamook. Cut off hwy 101 just south of Tillamook, visit the Air museum (worth a stop) on onto the Trask River hwy which parallels 101 and bypasses Tillamook city. This will come out on the North end of Tillamook city, short run up 101 to just south of GARABALDI, cut off onto MIAMI FOLEY road which parallels 101, but very little traffic and VERY crooked, comes out in Nehalem at the base of hwy 53 go to MANZANITA for camping then Back onto 53 for the trip back, if you have plenty of time you could go WEST to Seaside, just north of Seaside, take LEWIS AND CLARK Road which hooks up with HWY 202 and back HWY 202 into VERNONIA. The lewis and clark hwy202 run takes almost 2 hours.

these roads are all crooked, and have fewer slow tourists and cops than hwy18 and 101. oh and put the fast guys up front cause theres NO PLACE to pass

If any project cars fail to be completed in time, we can always hook you up as a navigator in another car.

I'm pretty sure I'm down to go. Do you know what time we'll be taking off Saturday? I don't know if my TII will be up and running (depends on if you guys can finish up the little things on my 13brew swap in time), but I'd want to go. Maybe ride shotgun with someone? I'm good with directions!

I believe we will be leaving right around 9am, if not a little earlier. We are having lunch in Newport, so that determins the take-off time.

Also, we will be returning on Sunday morning sometime before noon...11am or so. That will do two things: (1) ensure there is not too much traffic on 53 (fun road!) because the weekenders usually stay 'til the afternoon, and (2) get us to Camp 18 for lunch. I think Bill and I are playing an early round of Golf at Manzanita, but we should be done by 10am or so. Others are free to join us, do their own thing or just sleep in.

Thumbs up

I just booked a room at http://www.spindrift-inn.com/Rooms.htm
Rates are very affordable! I got a room with two separate rooms with a bed in each room.

Okay, I'm unfamiliar with the Portland area. Are we leaving from your shop? I know where that is. Also, the way things are going, I will probable need to be paired up with someone to ride with, if possible. I hope my 7 is done by then though.

The rendezvous is at Fry's Electronics in Wilsonville, just off of I-5:

Good luck getting the 7 running, but if it isn't, there should be no problem placing you as a navigator.

Why couldn't this have been a couple months from now.... My car is still under the knife!

This event is only a week and a half away. This is the current list I have. Please let me know if you want on or off the list, or make corrections as needed. Regardless of whether you are camping or staying in a motel, MAKE RESERVATIONS NOW. I know it is late in the season so you can probably find a place anyway, but reservations can save you the suprise and discomfort of sleeping in your car if everything ends up booked. We are staying in Manzanita. Obviously, you have the option to bug out early and return to town the same day, if you don't want to stay on the coast overnight.

Do we have a map of the route yet?

If the weather isn't good I'll be working on my car instead of driving...

Fair weather driver. Rain Sucks.
