yea things are going to a whole new level.. go with show baby .... by the way this engine has been built to handle 700 no corners cut.. pretty much every thing has been reworked or upgraded to the edge.. funny thing is the widebody will be worse.. 20B twin 40r's multi-piece ecc. ceramics.. jerico.. 18x13's 18x10's 1200 or bust.. yes I'm completely addicted and not to worried about it.. but thats why I have my own shop with my own lift.. addicted.. by the way I have a dyno next door .. addicted I need to drop an eye candy thread.... i've been raping this forum for years.. I think Ive had or have 10 rx7s now.. nuts..
I swear new thread coming just need a little more progress.. and a couple more parts to come in..

Since the last Rotards meeting in Salem, I've snatched up two more rotaries.

I snagged an '88 Anniversary Edition FC TII a week ago. It was a long Saturday drive (500+ miles) up to Seattle and back. The '88 AE has a problem with using excessive coolant. Sometimes it's a sign of bad internal water seals, which means tearing the engine apart to fix. Sometimes it's just a bad water pump gasket or worn out water pump. I'll let you all know the true nature of the water leak when we figure it out.

I found a 76 RX4 in a wrecking yard in Portland with no title. I tracked the title owner down, and now have a 76 RX4 with a clear title.

The 88 vert with the new engine finally got "finished". Only problem was that the TII tranny sounded more like a pop can with a few nickels in it. So TII tranny number one is replaced with TII tranny number two. I know nothing (as Sgt. Schultz used to say) about the history of the second tranny. It has an odd shift pattern. It hasn't been completely installed but enough to shift the gears and notice the long shift throw. It will be a couple of days before it gets looked at again.

Life is good.

Oh, I'm down.
Looking forward to another weekend of rotary mischief.

I went up to Silver Falls on Memorial weekend…. Between dodging the THOUSANDS of minivans and everyone else driving 20 mph under the speed limit, it was a fun drive. The falls were crazy PACKED!!

I wouldn’t mind heading back up there with another group of Rotards, but, am definitely open to something different.

Say, how about we have a ROTARY leading the group rather than a HONDA this time?

I got beat up by a honda, not too bad but beat. I then later tried to commit suicide over being beat by a civic hatch. only to accomplish a double FAIL.

NOTE: suicide comment was an exaggeration, so I could post the double fail. I did not attempt suicide. And it was a bad *** hatch. not rice

If we could find a rotary engined car fast enough to pass it. What was it anyway. a metro?

Oh ya, and someone in the lead that knew the back roads as well as the Dark brothers do.

Phil and Steve Dark are rotards through and through, they just happen to not own one right now. If you two want to "test drive" one (or two) of mine, just let me know. That is if you can fix 'em before the road-trip.

5th gear shifter rattle ... AHHHHH

Need help with shifter rattle.
I've searched the forum and nada.

I had my car jacked up for a couple hours while replacing an exhaust gasket... jacked with passanger front in air. After dropping the car back down and driving home, I noticed 5th gear was rattling through the shifter and seems to be getting worse today.

I really don't know if having the car in the air is related, but, that's when it changed.

Here is a video of the problem in action.

Any sugestions? Its the stock shifter.

Thanks,
-Chris

Eww. Thats no fun to listen to while buzzin down the road. A simple replacement of those worn out bushings should fix that.

I hope that's all it is. The rattle sounds deeper than just the shift handle though. Holding the shifter used to quite it... now it just dulls the sound.

So... jacking up the car wasn't related? bah.. was hoping it was simplier. I DO have a spare tranny

All i could find for bushings was the "upper" set for about $24 at Black Dragon.
Do you think swapping in a used set would fix the problem?
Anyone have a cheaper source for the needed bushings?

Thanks
-Chris

If anyone has multiple spare sets, I can use it being replaced myself.

Soooooo... I'm thinking it's not the bushings.

After some inspection I noticed the nut, spring and ball bearing that screws into the back of the shifter housing was gone... must have fell out. This spring and ball press up against the spindle select lock. (see attached photo for reference.. page 1-G6 of 1985 engine and chasis parts fiche...http://foxed.ca/rx7manual/manuals/pa...000A-4600A.pdf).
I was able to source a set from my parts car (parts cars = gold!!!) and put everything back together. STILL "RATTLE"

Here is a video of the noise WITHOUT the shifter even in.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIUKCR7mZaU

I'm thinking the "escape" of the bolt, spring and ball was very recent...

Could I have lost a lot of gear oil that high up? Maybe I just need to add some oil.

Ideas???

Maybe something has come loose in the shifter housing?.. You could try to put a lil gear oil down in there. Not to much but just enough to see if it was dry. Woudn't hurt. And I do have a few bushings if you need one or two.

Serviced the tranny... oil was dirty but not bad and didnt look low.

Toped it off and added some gear oil to the shifter housing... still same symptoms. noises in 5th.

I hope I don't need to swap the tranny, this one looks like it's already been rebuilt with signs of silicon at all joints.

luckily I have an '83 parts car I can steal the tranny from.... but, I've dropped my tranny once to swap clutches am not looking forward to doing it again.

Any other suggestions?

The "good" = I Swapped the tranny and no more noice in 5th (Thanks Joe)

The "Bad" = Now, when I downshift to 3rd, 2nd or 1st it "clunks" in or just grinds.
Everyone thinks its syncros, but, wouldn't that also affect upshifting?
Upshifting is VERY smooth and tight and the clutch feels great and does not slip.

I get the feeling I need to swap my tranny AGAIN.

Any ideas?

The Conclusion... I hope

Last night I put the 3rd tranny in this week (down to 1.5 hours for a tranny swap.. including full service) and it's all good. Down shifts great, no noise or vibration.

Everyone seems to agree the sycros were going out on that last tranny.

I sure hope I'm done with this

We can hope...

Thanks Robert (RW-7) and Joe (Joemaddox) for all your help and parts.

OK OK OK... I will stop posting non-BBQ related stuff in here

mine has the same issue as your first tranny. theres alot of play in the shifter also downshifting to 4 is a pita. I think I'm going to get a secound gen tranny to swap. Its not very loud but it gets annoying. I just stay in 4th most of the time.
