Rebuild your own engine class
Northwest Auto, in association with Steve Gambone, has put together a course to teach you how to rebuild RX7 rotary engines. You will be taught how to rebuild your own engine.
Mr. Gambone holds a current ASE certification and is also a factory trained Mazda Technician with over twenty years experience rebuilding rotary engines.
This is a 12 hour course that begins Monday November 21, 2005.
The course will consist of four laboratory sessions with each session lasting three hours.
Class is held on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm.
Enrolment is limited to four students, and is first-come first-served.
Course Agenda
Session One – Engine disassembly and determination of needed parts.
Session Two, Three, Four – Engine re-assembly.
Students will need to furnish their own engine and parts.
Tools will be available, you do not need to bring any tools of your own.
Price: $400
Location: Salem, Oregon
To enroll: Contact Bob Putman, Northwest Auto, (503) 588-1716.

Bob and Steve, maybe we can do a Sat-Sun 2 day session up in the Seattle area if your willing to make the trip, maybe add a extra student or 2 to make it worth your while. Just need to find a facility to host the sessions. Think about it.
damn thats exensive...... considering we just had a free engine building class in spokane...........
sounds like this is a very formal class tho......
im sure its worth the money , im broke tho lol

yeah thats way too much. I could see $40, but $400. do you get a free turbo or something. hell even the free shop up north had food. the video is $40 and you can watch it anytime you want. sounds like BS, I could think of 100 things better to spend my money on. we need more people to do the free ones. I can host here in Vancouver Wa, and I have a 12a that needs taken apart also. I will even buy the gasket kit if some people wanna get in on this.
well. on all other sides, i think this is a great idea and great deal.come on now and think about. most shops will charg you $800+ plus parts to rebuild and engine. if you want ports....well go a little higher. then you don't even know the condition the parts are in. this is half that, you can do it over and over, and you know the parts that are going in. i'm sure there will be porting done also. this also seems like a great hands on, with the video's what if you don't understand something? who's gonna take the time to show you? i've never watched a video on it, but there's the reasons. i'm sure steve knows a hell of alt about these engines, just search stuff. i remember the some pictures i seen of stuff he fabbed up. they looked sweet.
so otherwise, if somebody has the money and time, this would be a great opportunity for them to learn. i't not that expensive in comparason to what it could cost you to have it done.

That's a good idea. I'll ask Steve what he thinks.

If you want to follow up on your idea, please take it to your own thread and keep it out of this thread.
Thank you.

it just seems to be a little high on price, there was a free one just a few weeks ago. $400 when most people complain about the price of a full exhaust. $40 for a video and $360 for other parts. you can watch the video as many times as you need, even if you forget(which does happen). there I stayed on topic

If the class was free, then someone not unlike you would quickly complain that they had to drive a mile and a half; and the one that was put on in east timbukto last year, provided free limo service.
The readers of this thread are smart enough to figure the economics of the class and whether or not it fits into their budget; without your helpful example.
Thank you for your opinion. It has been noted. Now find something to do that is constructive other than bashing my thread.

I can voice my opinion on an open forum, I did not bash you or your skill once. so far it seems the count is 2 think its expensive. and one thinks it is reasonable. I did think the "free class" was too far for me to drive, but I did not complain once about it, go check if you want. it is wise to keep your thread on topic. your not worth it, thats my opinion. live with it.
I drove 400+ miles to the class. One to see the east siders and two to see the class. Class was good and I also got the chance for some more hands on after the class by helping tear down 4 12a engines. It was worth it IMO. This class would be worth it because you would get to work on your own engine, know what was good, get to do some porting or learn to most likely, help out Gambone (financially) and see his mad skills, and no tools needed. Salem is a completely reasonable drive for me and if I had the time, money, and parts I wouldn't mind doing it... But since that is not the case I will drool over other people's builds, watch the Turrentine video multiple times, and dream of someday building my own.
Gambone is a good guy and this would be a great opportunity for those that need to build an engine to help out themselves and Gambone at the same time.

i think its a good idea the only problem i see with it is that it says the first class is to tear the engine down and determine what parts need to be replaced, but it also says you must furnish your own parts so that only leaves you like two days to come up with any parts you need before the next session which will start the reassembly process.
I would totally do it, but It's on a Monday and Tuesday, which are the days I work. If it were to be on a weekend, and not in the Middle of OR, i'd say it would be a great deal for me. As i'm in Seattle.
I've always wanted to rebuild my own motor, and make it spec'd the way I want it to be. Does the Class also help you put the motor in your car? Just curious how i'm suppose to get a worn down 12a down to Salem, and then a rebuilt 12a back up, while driving down my 7

If one wanted to keep their engine, while taking the class, we have 12a, 13b, and 20b engines in-shop. These engines are available; contact Bob.
i would totaly do it, Sounds like a GReat idea, but to damn far away, 400 bucks would leave me with not enough for parts, I wish someone up in the north end would do somthing like this,
A Seattles sounds good to me, I get the bed and Bob gets the fold down to sleep on, but there is going to be one problem, the Road Track sleeps two and the wife has totale control of bording tickets

One of the slots has been filled. The Spyder is going to be attending this first course; rebuilding one of the early (#810) 20b's. Welcome Marc.
On another note; there has been serious interest in having a weekend course. If the course were offered over the course of a couple of weekends, would that be more appealing than the evening classes?
