I could help, I have an 88 NA also. GTU here.
I had to do mine twice, the rat didn't get the hint the first time.
Original rat's nest removal:

Round 2 the next day:

It was pretty easy for me, I just put on some gloves, simply pulled out the nest, and sprayed the engine with hose. Spay it good to clean all the little rat poops off the intake. Have not had any issues. Even after all rats nest removals, I still pass smog.

Completely missed the joke. I thought it was honestly funny....... but that's cool. Since we want to be silly:
Darn it. At my last drift event I put Rx7 as the model.... I hope they don't get mad.
Do you know what kinda car this is so I can fill it in correct next time? Ford probe? MR2?

Anyways, this is a good diagram / guide to remove the rats nest.

Oh snap MR2 owner here (represent). I was thinking of putting a hamster wheel in the frunk because the engine is in the correct spot to begin with. Props to you though for going to the dark side and doing a engine swap....Love the birds nest.

I went back and got it and it had deer hair all over it. I was a wreck to say the least.
Bambi seemed stunned but fine, and ran off. </deerstory>

But, it took me 4 weekends working alone to get it up and going for autoX. Research it, it's stupid easy and affordable if you have the time and space.
I have not seen a rotary powered 7 at a track for about a year now. All the FCs and FDs I see moving on their own power at the tracks are all piston. Wish some of the rotards around here would step up and come to the track.
