Oregon area rotary specialist?

I just bought a 87' TII and it needs an engine rebuild. I am wondering where I should take it. I have heard bad things about Pineapple Racing. Should I just buy a Mazda reman. engine or rebuild this one? I am new to the scene, so any help would be great. Thank you.

I would definitely take it pineapple racing for the rebuild! Rob has my motor now. Since you're in the PDX go to pineapple and have a chat with Rob.

pineapple = expensive but worth every penny. i've heard some mixed reviews about turbo engines but when its time for my rebuild i have blind faith that they'll get it done better than anyone else.

The reason they might seem expensive, it the fact that they use new rotor housings, seals, oil control rings, etc. Just new housings are $1000+, I think. I'm shure Blake can put the real number up. Bottom line is, that to have a engine built with new parts is not cheap. CJ

Consider porting while it is apart, at least go with a good streetport and inquire about porting the turbo wastegate while things are apart. These 2 things combined are well worth the $$$ and you really only get one crack at them (you're never gonna take any of this apart again).

That is correct, CJ. New rotor housings alone add about $1,100 to the rebuild at our cost (Mazda Retail is $815.05 each for FD rotor housings). A typical rebuild costs about $2K in parts alone, not counting labor. It is not possible to build a 'quality' engine for less than $2,800, in our opinion, which is why we refuse to build 'floorsweepers' (collections of used parts). By 'quality', I mean an engine that will last as long or longer than the original engine. Anyone can build a $1,500 or even $1,000 engine that will last a couple years, but a quality engine can't possibly cost less than the price of the new parts required to build it.

I actually wrote up quite a few thoughts on engine rebuilding in the Pineapple Racing vendor sub-forum, which you might want to read. >> HERE <<

Just had my T-II motor rebuilt at Pineapple. Only 800 Miles on the motor and no surprises so far (Not that I would expect any). Right from the get go Pineapple gave me the impression of a quality over quantity kind of place unlike the other 99% of shops nowadays. From my own experience Rob will devote personally however much time it takes to ensuring a proper application specific build and adressing any questions during and long after the job is done. I only wished their shop was up here in Seattle, but then again I probably would just camp out there-LOL!
