Name that tuner / Id the builder
Can any one identify the builder of this engine?
It was part of an abandoned storage auction (in the Portland, Oregon area) along with other high-quality miscellaneous tools (lots of snap-on) and RX7 parts.
The yellow tape is lightweight (like a premium masking tape) and it is covering a heavier blue rubberized tape.
There is no indication of stampings on the housings, that Mazda usually does for their remanufactured engines, except for the expected "F" (front housing) and "R" (rear housing).

Mystery solved?
The engine may have come from Pineapple, through an unexpected path.
I got a phone call from a most honest person, The Spyder, and he told me that Pineapple was burglarized a while back. Among the stolen goods were a bunch of snap-on tools, a brand new FD engine, and a three-rotor single turbo race engine.
I gave The Spyder the name and phone number of the party I bought the engine from. And, yes, I did get a receipt for it when I bought it. They only had (for sale) the FD engine pictured; no 20b.
I hope the low-life-rotten-turds that stole from Pineapple gets their freedom taken away for a long time.

one less dirtbag
One of the dirtbags that allegedly stole the engine is now in jail.
The guy that rented the storage unit has allegedly confessed to stealing the engine.
Rob Golden from Pineapple came to my shop and he now has his stolen engine back.
His missing 20b and tools are still out there somewhere.
It's the ***** that they got stolen. It's the ***** that the guy that bought the engine from the storage and I are both out the money we paid for the engine but there is a process to recover our money.
I have to sue the guy that I bought the engine from; then he has to sue the storage company; then the storage company has to sue the insurance company; then the insurance company has to get back the money that was paid to Pineapple.
The good news is there is one less dirtbag on the street.
I personally think that it is essential that we rotards continue to stick together and keep the lines of communication open and flowing. Without our combined interest in this hobby/business Rob may have never gotten his engine back.
I'm still waiting to get back some parts needed to tune my 20b, which were never returned. I look forward to others also doing the right thing.
Peace

I've been better. I broke both my legs in September when I was felling a tree. I broke my right arm in November when I slipped on some leaves and tried to break my fall with my right hand. I had surgery Thursday to fix the right wrist.
I was expecting to get back some stuff needed to tune my TII with a 20b in it (my microtec cd and manual), after a year or two, on Saturday but he was a no show/no call/won't answer. I'm trying to fix the black FD after he was going to buy it. He took it with about 44K miles on it and returned it with 60K miles and a massive coolant leak, saying he didn't want to buy it after all because (among other things) the engine ate water and was going out. All it needed was an AST to fix the leak. He said he had an AST that he got for free and would give me when he came down on Saturday. A couple of years ago he went into a ditch in one of my other FD's, bent the frame and when it was returned, there were no brake pads in the front. I have not looked at the rear brakes yet. I paid to have the frame straightened but it was not done correctly and is going to another body shop to re-fix the frame. The TII/20b door was mangled while in his possession. I had the body straightened, repainted to the original black and put lambo doors on it. I also had the ditched-FD painted black with gold metal flake and put lambo doors on it. I'm in the process of putting an LS1 with a T-56 six speed in it.
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?
I'm still optimistic that all these set backs will work out for the better, but it's been a bit discouraging.

You would have no choice. Failing to return stolen merchandise is a crime. Just because you buy stolen goods innocently, doesn't change the fact that they are stolen goods.
The other issue it is just the right thing to do. Sad that doing the right thing seems to be such a rarity these days.

hoofhearted is a stand up guy for posting this not to mention returning the motor to the owner. I hope is doesn’t take too long to get your money back. I sure hope the thief or thieves get locked up for a long time. On a side note, I can't believe some of the post in this thread .

Remember
Erik,
I remember selling you the engine. It's been six months since you bought it.
There was no warranty but if you return the engine; I'll give you your money back. I'm don't do this "rotard" stuff to make money.
Here are the PM's that I have about it...

Either way, I'm interested. When would I be able to pick it up?
Thanks a lot, and get back to me soon so I can plan the trek. I'm available any day of the week.

Erik,
I got the engine from another rotary enthusiast who lives about 20 miles from me.
As I remember the story...It is a JDM. He had it running but couldn't tune it properly. I did see it running and it sounded OK but there was a vacuum leak or some other esoteric problem that he never diagnosed. He got frustrated with tweaking it and traded it to me for a good running turnkey S4 NA engine. The guy is a forum member but I don't remember his handle or name.
I'm restricted in my liberty to "up and go" whenever I want since I broke both my legs a week ago. I'm staying with family until next weekend. I went back to work last Friday and will be working during the days. I can request one of my children drive me to the shop to meet you, but I'm at their mercy and their schedules.
If you want it. I'll hold it for you and consider it sold.
Bob
ps. How's that window regulator switch working that I sent last winter?

+1 That was a good motor when Kevin and I had it. We couldnt get it to run due to several different things, including the wrong ECU. We got it to turn over a few times it just wouldn't run on its own, hence the wrong ECU.
Erik, feel free to PM me with any further questions I may be able to answer about that motor. Sorry to hear about that.
-Robert.
