ok, SCCA sucks here in portland. they only have 4 events here in town, and theyre paired together. the rest are up in WA somewhere, too far for me to drive.
they charge too much, and you only get 3 or 4 runs. their courses are super short too.
other clubs are cheaper (porsche is same price), but offer double the runs, and have a larger number of local events.

If you want a lot more runs, show up on practice day.
As for the price, the SCCA folks tend to take the competition rather seriously, but still have fun. The entry is the cheapest part of the whole weekend. After spending 7k on an engine, 2.5k on tires and wheels, a few bucks on other mods, I don't really think the entry fee is much to worry about. Refer back to the part on 'serious'.
As for driving to WA, if you want a large, smooth and long course, that's where you have to go.
Unless you know of some other venue closer by that might work for autocross use, Packwood WA is the place to go. It would be great to have something closer, but there's nothing closer (so far) that can compare with the course at Packwood.

PCA has fewer cars, and doesnt devide the day in half, so you end up with twice the runs for the same price. they have like 7 autox's this year.
the one is salem is half the price, twice the runs, and alos run like 7 or 8 events.
thats enough incentive for me. and besides, after all that money dumping in my car, $40 is a lot of money :-(
