GTU-S NASCAR Mini Stock
Some of you may remember a red '89 GTU-S that went up for sale last summer on Craigslist. I lucked out a beat everyone to it and purchased the car to tear down and build my new circle track stockcar out of. I wanted to post my progress though some of you curse me for disecting this car.
The first race is April 12th and the car will not be ready but I have 4 weeks before the next race and I encourage anyone and everyone to come out to evergreenspeedway.com and check out the action. There is a new track owner who is a driver and the programs will be filled with more race action then ever before including the Super Stock Late Model stockcars, the Bomber division, the Mini Stocks and two divisions of figure 8 racing.
And oh ya, I still have glass and several crates of misc. stuff off the car that I need gone, looking for a $200 or so for the rest of the parts or you can call or email for pics if you want something specific. Just too many things to list so sorry for no prices or pics and yes I know there is a seperate page for sales items.

once the the chassis is done and the engine is running again I may be looking for some tuning tips and tricks, the engine sounds really strong.
Let me know what you guys think!

I may end up donating the rest of the parts once my car is finished. I have a mix of interior parts and stuff from under the hood that i'm no longer using.

don't worry about what people say, it's your seven! Have fun with it! Do what you want. Get some wins and hopefully suprise some people!
I remember I talked with you on the phone I picked up your tail lights. Back then you said the rules were going to be super tight, do you think you will have a chance with a non-modded 13b NA?

Excellent. I've been mini-stock racing for years now. They don't allow rotary engines up here. Otherwise I'd be all over an RX-7 in a heartbeat.

I disagree. Every person has something they like to do, some might say that daily driving, drifting, or auto crossing is a waste of an rx7, but to the person doing it and enjoying what they do, it is not a waste to them. If people didn't try new things everyone would be in the same car doing the same thing.

Something rare and in perfect condition = NO!

The reason it bothers us is because he ruined a beautiful car.
Imagine that it had a bunch of body dings, stripped interior, needed paint..
There are plenty of cars like that that would've been perfectly acceptable for this.
But in contrast, the car looked nearly immaculate.
Hence it is a waste to ruin a stock car [esp. a rare trim level..] to turn into a race car.
If it needed body/interior work it would almost make sense to do this.
"daily driving, drifting, or auto crossing is a waste of an rx7"... That is a very poor comparison, as those activities DO NOT require the destruction of what made this car special.
[I personally don't like the smaller roll cages either, but even they don't require the interior to be removed and the body to be chopped up..]
in summary...
"what a waste" <-- Amen.
...PS, I am emotionally attached to my cars.
I can hardly look at what happened to my GXL.. [Tahoe'd on the front pass. qtr panel], and I admit the GXL wasn't very pretty even before the accident, but it still didn't deserve to be killed..
What he's done, in my view, is akin to what the *^$ned Tahoe did [and is doing] to my GXL.. Except that his will drive again..

he could have found an 86 4 lug base with no sunroof and done the same thing... he could even have accomplished his goals with a sunroof car... it's a sad day in GTUs history

if he bought the car then its his, hands down.
he can go and drive it off a cliff in reality.
derek wht you should focus more on is that sure he chopped upa GTUs but atleast he let the rotary community recirculate what he didn't want off of it instead of tossing it.

I disagree with your disagreeing ^_-

I wish they'd allow rotary motors on the oval on this side of the state. I'd have my boys running those instead of fox body muttstains.
and for all you haters.....a. he just made all the others a little more rare and valuable.
b. there is a way you could've stopped this from happening, but you failed to step up with the cash before him.
And finally c. I don't think he has a responsibility to anyone but himself. there's hundreds of people on here who've hacked up 7's. relax a little.
With any luck his passion will start a new thing, and more of us can run a rotary on the oval track.

Regardless of who agrees or disagrees with what I've done, I respect all of your opinions. I was honest from the start about my intentions and had no idea what a GTU-s was. Once the emails rolled in telling me I was an idiot and someone told me about this forum I offered the car up and postponed the tear down for a week so I could do more research and give everyone some time to spread the word and make an offer. I recieved two offers which the best one included a partial trade for an x-box and $700 cash. I grossed almost 4 times what I paid for the car of the parts and I kept the full Racing beat exhaust and an Intake and a Pioneer cd player. No real number has ever been discovered by me as to how many GTU-S' were made in '89 but I've seen plenty in the last 6 months. I've read that in '90 there were only 200 that came off the line.
Bottom line is, as an enthusiest of anything that burns fuel, I was even a little sad to tear this car down and was really hoping that a good offer would come through. The whole reason the GTU-S was made was to produce enough N/A Sport models so they could be used in racing, I mean, it's kind of funny that there was such a big fuss put up by some even though the car is going to be used for what it was intended for.
Anyway, I took some pics off my first posting and here are a couple of more current photos. Thanks to all that are supportive and like I said, I completly understand why some of you have the opinions you do and I respect your honesty.

To everyone hating on me for hating on the proj.. Yes, I know it's his car. I wouldn't lift a finger to stop him except to offer up reasons not to do it [which apparently was already done]. If I'd seen a thread about this before he started [his offer to sell it instead of chop], I would've tried to buy it..
But, it was already done, and I never saw the old thread.
Sorry for all the trouble.
So for now, the last things I can say are:
I'm glad you did realize before you started to work. [And sorry that people were being stupid]...
...and since you've done so much, you better get us some wins with it.

I dig the project. I'm not nearly as worried about what you did to the car as what your competitors will do.
The chassis will be stronger in torsion if you put diagonals in the top of the cage rather than the fore-aft bar in the middle. My cage doesn't have anything in that area though. My cage isn't as extensive since I expect fewer people to intentionally hit the car. My rear spring towers were plated and the main hoop supports land there. Also, my rockers were left intact. They add a lot of bending strength. I used an '87 Sport that had already been robbed of it's engine and some other parts so I imagine fewer people will give me grief for hacking the car.

Do you have any pics of your car to send?
I thought about some other bars but they can be added if need be. The driver's are pretty friendly but the concrete wall and the oversized dump truck tires filled with water are not.
