Smile FD Update+Question

I am finally getting the FD back on Monday. The street port was said to have turned out really well. Atkins also did the pressure and compression test and the numbers were very great. I was wondering if any of you could tell me how to break in the new motor. I have heard no higher than 3000 RPMs for 500 miles, then an oil change. Thanks for the help and here are some pictures.

A STi they are working on, the FD, and Cody (the owners) Porsche...one of his many cars..

Keeping it under 3000 rpm for 500 miles will be more detrimental than benefitial. What youll want to do is drive around in-city for a while, varrying rpm from idle to 5-6k rpm. What you want to watch out for is boost, you have to make sure you stay out of it, and also do not lug the engine i.e. running at 1k rpm in 5th gear - thats bad for it too.

So dont boost the car, dont stay at the same rpm for a long time, and dont load the engine too much.

Do a search in the 3rd gen archives...all this information here I got from there.

Don't do something like drive to california at 80mph... the engine wears in at the stress levels experienced at that RPM. It's absolutely necessary for you to make sure that you show the engine the full rev range. Staying out of boost is preferred, however you don't have to be ashamed if you have to put a little foot into it to pass or merge onto the highway. What I'm saying is a little boost won't hurt anything.

I would figure the people that did the rebuild would give you info on the breakin so you can be covered under "Warranty" lol

90 days is all?! That's kinda sketchy IMO. Nothing against the shop. I just don't understand why they would only give you 90 days...? That's pretty much a break-in warranty only....!! At least for my driving... Daily driver I guess it would work out alright cuz on avg you'd prolly drive 500-1000 miles per month depending on your commute. But still that's like a 3000 miles warranty?! Gotham offers 12 month/12,000 miles on their engines.

Don't do a 5-6k rpm break in. Rob at Pineapple does'nt even have you do that high of a rpm break in on a peripheral engine. Trust me, I've owned a bunch of them.

According to Rob, (This was from back quite awhile ago.) at 50 miles change the filter and oil. Upto 500 miles keep it below 4k rpms with little boost. Change the oil/filter at 500. After 500 miles slowly start increasing the rpms and boost, until you are at redline around 1k+ miles. At 1500 miles it should be broken in completely.

Of course, the break in period all depends apon what type of engine parts you had replaced when the engine was rebuilt.
