WA Edmonds Area Engine Work/Rebuild Advice

Have had a 89 GXL with a N/A 13B for a couple of years, my first rotary. Engine problems a few months ago, and based on a local mechanic's diagnostic & my research I believe I have a blown apex seal(s).. I read the sticky NW list of Motor Rebuilders and researched from there & the web. It looks like Jerry's Little Cars in Kent would be a excellent choice for my repair as he is a rotary specialist, is recommended by many, has good reviews, and what seems like fair pricing.

I am looking for advice about this process. Experience with Jerry's... Any good experience with places closer to me in the north end(Edmonds)? What kind of cash outlay should I be ready for? Any advice for transporting my car to the shop? Words of wisdom to avoid pitfalls... Thanks!

if you can pull your own motor and bring it on a stand/crate/tub and install it back in your car yourself, its going to be way cheaper. i would expect 4-600 to do that.

i live close to jerrys and they have a really good reputation. I have not taken them any work but i plan on taking my mazda3 there for servicing in the near future.

they seem knowledgeable and have some rare tools that are needed for a proper rebuild. if you are just looking for a stock build i think its a good place.

Not really anything in the north end anymore, i too have heard good things about jerry's, but no experience.

As spoongebob said, if you can pull it yourself, do it. I was really surprised how easy it was the first time i pulled mine. Of course i didn't have to put it back in.....

An even better option for you would be First Stop Performance in Snohomish. It's closer, and Don (the owner) is an expert in rotaries. He even does engine rebuilds, so you're in luck. As far as mechanics go, he is a great guy; honest, fair pricing, and extremely knowledgeable about our cars and rotary engines in general.

Last time I went to his shop (a few weeks ago), he had 2 FB's, an FC, an FD, and an RX-8 sitting around, so that should give you an idea of his expertise level. Anyway, here's his website, the phone number is on there.

1st Stop Performance offers exceptional services at reasonable prices

that 1st performance seems like an interesting place.

go in and ask for the timing belt special and see what kind of super-blank look he gives you.

Thanks

Thanks for the responses guys!

I like the idea of saving some coin and pulling the engine myself, but a am in a condo with no practical way to do any mechanics here.. I will know more as I get some quotes, if total cost is more than current budget, I may consider getting some temp storage or see if one of my buddies has a little garage space.

Thanks for the 1st Stop recommendation. I went to the website and like what I see so far and Snohomish is a LOT closer to me than Kent. One great feature 1st Stop has solves a problem of mine.. They list free pick up and re-delivery, I will check to make sure my address is covered. I will contact them today and see where it go's..

Thanks again, I welcome any suggestions & will post with updates.
