custom speaker install!!!
Well i went to car toys... they quoted me about 300 bucks, plus the 150 for the speakers to install them how i wanted them in the car..... i said screw them, only bought the speakers and here is what i did, all i used was a cordless screw gun, and a dremmel tool with a cutting disc. made a god-awful plastic mess of my room though!
1. took the hole template that came with the speakers, and the disassembled storage bin lid, traced the template onto the lid and cut it out. they way the lid is put together the underside is screwed down to the topside.
2. ground out the same size hole on the underside of the top half of the lid, there were alot of splines and a raised bump on the underside that had to be ground out, chipped off whatever in order to give clearance for the speaker on the other side.
3. Drilled many holes in a "decrotive" pattern in the topside of the lid, to allow sound to escape
4. put everything backtogether, re-ran the wiring from the rear strut towers under the carpet into the storage bins, plugged in the speakers and was good to go!
Cool part about the storage bins is that they already have a lock built in! it all fits together really nice and sounds great!

oops on that 3x post.... forum was being really slow, didn't think any of my threads got posted so i was going to wait till later. but hey one did make it... 3 times.
yup some pictures, forgot to take them all along the way though lol sorta before/after

and you can't even tell they are there unless on get really close to them to spot the small drill holes in the top of the lid, the carpet hides them pretty well though.
feel free to tell me what ya think. I'd be willing to help anyone else do this with they're 2nd gen if they want..... the speakers i put in were 6x9 4-ways & t hey ended up sounding really good, much better than the stock size 4 inchers.... plus with the size of the inside of the car... you don't really need a subwoofer!

How'd you get the carpet off the plastic peice?? I had one hell of a time trying to do that when i put my sub where those used to go and almost ruined the entire peice just getting the carpet off.

the holes were drilled in the same oval shape as the speaker, up through the carpet. so the lid itself is acting as a grill... the way the lid is put together there is a top half, and a lower half... they screw together.... I'd have pics but i didn't really think about taking them... you can see in the first pic, the speaker is mounted to the bottom half of the lid, which has the large hole in it for the speaker. then the top half of the lid has the drill holes in it.
I do belive I already mentioned that it sounds great... the bins act as speaker boxes somewhat to help the sound too, as long as nothing is covering the bins it sounds KICK ***.... plenty for the size of the cabin in a 7
