As far as the shielding of the cone filter it has also been covered.
There is a company called spectre that has a ton of products specifically designed for the do it yourselfer CAI needs. Auto Zone is supposed to be a supplier for them.
One thing to remember if you want to get the full benefit is to relocate the air temp sensor that is in the plenum to the CAI piping.

About 8 years ago, I made a serious Cold Air Intake setup for my 89 GTU-S. Cone filter, custom fiberglass insulated box, Fresh air headlight cover, Modified FTP into a duct, etc. I dynoed it before and after and saw an improvement of 1 goddamn HP. Hundreds of dollars for 1 RWHP. It looked cool and everybody wanted to copy it, but what a waste of money! Then, I bought a used down pipe and presilencer for $100 and got 23 RWHP! The moral of the story is: forget the CAI and spend your hard-earned money on the exhaust.

Take it to the dragstrip. Or do 40-70mph timed runs in 2nd or 3rd gear.
On a side note, back in the day, I use to own a N/A 90. It had a Pineapple Racing "fuel mileage" port , Dual 2" exhaust, Pineapple Sleeves, ported upper and lower intake manifolds, (Under Robs supervision), cone filter, 17lb RB flywheel, HI-6, Jacobs ignition wiring, S-AFC, etc. It put down 167rwhp on Ralph Friends (Groundzero motorsports) mustang dyno. It made peak power at 8k rpms, and peak ftlbs at 7k if I recall correctly. It ran a best time of 14.8, and fastest trap of 97mph. I guess what I'm tyring to say is, that I had everything done to it I possiably could....and it still wasn't that fast. If I where to do it all over again, I would simply save up and buy a turbo II or a 3rd gen. As it is, my 3rd gen turns a higher trap speed in the 1/8 mile, than my old 90 did in the 1/4. The 90 was a good car, but don't expect to much from a n/a car. my .02. CJ
