Hello Rx7_FREAKKK, how are you today? Happy new year, and thanks for asking about my choice of Rx7.

Not sure how these threads always get turned around onto me, but sure I will give you the story of how my Rx-7 came around.

Back in ... I think 2004 or 2005 I was driving a 1993 Chevy Cavalier. It was a 3 speed automatic, periwinkle blue, that ran 18.8s. lol Wasn't my favorite car in the world, but I was competing in DB Drag races, and had turned the whole truck into a subwoofer box. Was fun, but the car didn't get that good of gas mileage with cement in the body and doors. lol It was a lot better than my first car though, a 1984 caprice classic. That thing was a boat, but a great car for a first car I must say.

First let me start off by saying I was a sheltered, computer nerd at this time. I started my own game server hosting company using tons of servers and linux in high school that I sold to pay for college. I was clueless to what anything outside of Yakima was, and had no clue on cars in general. lol

Well one day driving around in Yakima with the Cavalier, on 40th ave in the rain I am completely stopped waiting on a red light. About 10 seconds later I hear tires screeching behind getting louder and louder. All of a sudden I am looking at the roof of my car, and then my vision goes dark. I could still hear, and was conscious by my vision was completely gone. A drunk driver in a mustang cobra decided it would be a great idea to go over 100 mph in a 35 in the rain, and was unable to slow down before hitting me. It shot me completely through the intersection (while traffic was going through it since they had a green) and I stopped at the other side facing the wrong direction. At least that is what everyone that was there told me. Some people that knew my dad said they actually saw me get shot through. It turns out that the dual layer MDF with cement filled between the layers subwoofer box didn't crush and it pushed me like a pool ball.

Anyways, after I recovered from that, they called the car totaled and I had about $3k to spend on a car. Being a stupid young kid, and having only a week before I started my freshmen year at WSU, all I asked for was a red car with a manual transmission. About 1 block from where I got hit sitting in a bowling alley parking lot was a red mazda rx7. I called the guy, took a test drive, and took it to my mechanic to get checked out. My mechanic said there is a slight oil leak, but nothing else is wrong. Didn't tell me it had a rotary engine, and even if he would have I would not have had a clue what he was talking about.

So I purchase the car, and drive it to WSU (3 hour trip) a few days later. I love it, I love shifting the gears manually, and learning how to drive it in general. About 3 months later in the bad Pullman WA weather, I find out the hard way the that car is rear wheel drive. I didn't even know it was rear wheel drive when I bought it. That is how clueless I was. lol I only wanted a red car with a manual transmission and was pretty worried about having this rear wheel drive car in the Pullman's bad winter.

Anyways, I came back to Yakima for some reason and my older gaming friend "NoPro" invited me to the track to see what the rx7 would run. Being a new to manual transmissions I screwed up the transmission trying to shift fast, and blew the NA transmission about a week later just driving around normally. My dad and I swapped out the transmission to another one, and I blew that one about a month later, but I didn't feel that one was my fault. Most likely was though. lol

Replaced the transmission and did one of my last trips to Seattle to close out the rest of my business. It was super hot in Seattle and I was enjoying my AC. I got caught up in a traffic jam and before I could even think twice the temp needle was on H. I pulled off as soon as I could but she was hurt. For about the next month I limped the car around while it drank water. :/ When I got back to Yakima I swapped the engine out with a spare engine I got from a friend in Yakima.

Researching on the forum, I came across some information that the T2 transmissions were more strong, and that I can swap all the T2 stuff into my NA if I really wanted to. I took some of my money and bought a crashed turbo2 car with a running engine from someone up north. Swapped it all over, and was in heaven. Boost was sooooo awesome. If you just barely hit the gas and then let off the bov would make the car sound like it was breathing. lol It was also seriously faster. >

I drove the T2 swap all winter in Pullman where it was to see how fun it was skidding around in the snow. Some time after, possibly my birthday in February I drove the 3 hour trip home back to Yakima. I was passing a couple semi when the vac line going to the pressure sensor and FCD either melted or popped off. It was zip tied on, so I think it melted. Anyways, I lost my first rotor. Little did I know, how many rotors I was going to blow in the future. lol

In a hurry to get back to WSU, I got a replacement engine from a junk yard or something, and threw it in. It wasn't the most healthy engine in the world but it worked. Got me to school for a couple months before AutoX season started.

Went to my first Autocross, and blew the engine. Was surprised was pretty weak. This time I swapped the engine out in my dorms parking lot with the help of a few dorm mates. No engine hoist was interesting.

This engine was much stronger and fresher, and I attended my first drift event at Evergreen speedway. Drifting was literally the most fun you can have in a car, and although I sucked it was so fun.

I was so tired after the event I couldn't even drive home. lol Anyway the next morning drive home from the Hotel something was definitely wrong with the engine. Turns out I chipped or cracked an apex seal. Took it apart for the rebuild but the housings were toast.

At this point I was running out of cheap spare turbo engines and researched how to convert an 6 port NA block to 6 port NA-T. Much more simple that you would think.

Made some pretty good power for NA-T on 4 psi.

Anyways, would drive it for a couple months getting all the bugs out , go to another AutoX event, then a drift event, and blew the engine up. Replace it, drive it around, go to another couple events, blew it up, replace it. Do a little race with my friend Rob on here vs his little honda, blow it up, replace it.

At this time, I had 3 or 4 Rx7 cars, two fully running, two for spare parts. lol. However the ones I rebuilt from two decent blocks have worked well on the stock turbo, and I ended up putting those in the cars I sold after not needing backups any more.

The cycle was starting to get annoying, something different breaking or happening each time causing the car to go down and make my life pretty stressful. My girlfriend and family was starting to get annoyed also so I told them I would do one last engine, going all out (or at least as much as I could afford being a college student and drifter) and if that breaks, I promised them I would go v8.

I started my 13b-RE build. At this point I was pretty much pro at re-building rotary engines, but I had this one professionally ported, professionally tuned, had all the goodies such as C02 powered boost controller, Haltech e11v2, and had a medium sized T04E/PT67 turbo on it. Put down a nice 314 rwhp at 11 psi. Was more than happy with it. Got it all worn in, tuned, and at around 5000 miles went to my first drift event. After the event the car felt like it was slowly getting weaker and weaker. It barely made it back to WSU, where I did a compression check and got weird numbers. Took it apart to find the SIDE SEAL was falling into the over ported port and crashing up against the port causing it to chip off slowly. That was it. V8 time.

Bought a 2000 Chevy Camaro z28 with 70,000 miles on it from a copart auction for $3000. Took all the parts off it, and sold everything I didn't need. After the swapping the engine into the FC and successfully doing the first autox I was only down $700 for the whole swap. I sold all my old 13b-RE things and my spare/back up FCs, because I simply didn't need them any more. The power and response even in stock form was amazing. My stock LS1 Dyno, no tune, nothing.

Had to make many changes to the suspension and rear tire size.

Then drifting season started and it has been perfect. I was in at least 20 events between AutoX and drift this year, and the only issue I have came across was that I needed a power steering cooler for Pacific Raceways 15 minutes of hot lap drifting. Lock to lock to lock to lock for 15 minutes is crazy fun though.

Here are some random drift pictures of this 2011 season with the ls1:

But really, the only reason I bought an Rx7 is becuase it is Red, had a manual transmission, and was for sale where I was looking for a car. When I purchased it, I didn't know it had a rotary engine, didn't know what a rotary engine was, and didn't know it was rear wheel drive. I hope this answers all your questions? I don't honestly think anybody will read any of that, and I left a LOT out, but there you go.

well happy new your to you and everyone too. 2012 should be a banging killer one.

Btw I cant speak for everyone. But I baught the rx7 because 1 rotary been in the family since i was 12. I knew how they work. and i know how to work on them, And Plus i love how people talk **** about rotary engines and how much they suck.( Mostly from honda drivers. )

And i love how many people call them a POS. And the other reason i have an Rx7 because Not many people have them, And they are not a dime a dozen on the road. Such as hondas and other cars. So yes. rotery engines need more replacing. But a rotary engine is rare on the road for many reasons. thats why i have one. I dont Dislike V8s. they are good engines. and yes have lots of low end. I just rather have the rareness. And the exhaust tone. I dont race. So its not like i am in it for the racing qualities. And if i was racing. I would build one hell of a beast rotary. just my two cents

Nice bio there Tweak. Sorry to hear you ripped the heart out of so many 7's, but your ride looks solid enough now. Man that looks like fun.

Talk about the ultimate hijack but I just had to leave this one in because it was such an interesting developmental story, ending with some viddies and then a punch to the rotary gut in Font Size=3.

I like your writing style/prowess....not often seen on these boards.

Hopefully, at this point, everyone who had problems has been made whole. If there is anyone still having a problem, if you could supply the IP address in a PM to me, we'll see if IB can work around that.

If not, I believe we can call this saga over. I apologize for the out-of-left-field way this had to come about but I also hope our quick reaction to the problems uncovered can give everyone faith that we do care about what the membership thinks and will try crazy things to solve problems. I thank you for the feedback that allowed the tweaking to have its results confirmed.

Time for the next big project.

i bought my rx7 because i got an FB for free, loved it, drove it for a few months, and it was stolen. fast forward 3 years, i find out there was local amateur drifting, went it search for a RWD car. was completely blown away at how the 30 year old STOCK rx7 handled better than my civic with full suspension, so when it came time to buy a new rwd car i went with an FC.

drove the rotary, thought it was cool, but just too finicky/temperamental, especially coming from honda's, so i've ditched that and now doing a 1jz swap..

with my friend tweak so we can do awesome drifty things with our piston-powered rx7's. trolololol

…And now that it has devolved to this, please take a look at my sig.

There would be no Mazda today if they hadn't suck with the Rotary. [Japan was trying to consolidate their auto industry.. Our silly triangle engine made Mazda unique enough to survive]

It doesn't take black magic to have a reliable Rotary, though it doesn't seem to respect greed...

If you want a Toyota-powered FC... Why not just buy a MkIII Supra XD? That's all it'll be...

And if you want to argue any of this with me, look at my User Title. I'm a stubborn zealot, so there's not much point. ^_-

Speaking of which, we should probably lock this thread and delete Tatakai's, rotary-guy's and this post.

Why delete mine? I didn't say anything disrepectful, off topic yes but there was no rotary bashing etc. All I did was read a post and respond to a unique part lol.
