The 89 making it to ABF is in doubt.

Hmm, apparently you hadn't done your research about Hayes prior

They aren't known to be the best of people from what I've read...

I actually had a chance to talk to the Nephew of the guy that started Hayes Rotary (Don?) and he stopped working there to go to another shop because he didn't like what was going on.

Good luck with everything, I hope you get it all worked out.

Yah, here's an example of some of what's used in a hayes rebuild http://www.nopistons.com/forums/inde...howtopic=21350

my first 7, a 87 TII, had a coolant seal leak after only 30k on a hayes rebuild... i bought it like that, the previous owner was a 50 something year old guy who drove it like a grandpa lol... very low quality motor.

Dr. Jones I am in the area. If thats your only RX-7 and you were planning to go to ABF alone you are willing to ride in my car and I am willing to help you in any other ways I can. I have no experience tuning the Microtech though but I can put you in touch with the people to get your car running right but they would be in Portland.

just cause I feel spiteful, I'd say Hayes are not the only people from Redmond who screwed people.

I'm glad you posted Dr.Jones on what Hayes did to you. People need to know these things. I feel for you, as I went through crap with the old "Mazdas and More". Whats really sucky is you pay these shops money yet they still are dishonest or treat you like crap. Honestly, I think there's only a couple shops left in the area left that are honest. Thats Mark at Mt.peak and Lopie in Olympia. Engine rebuilds I would take to Mikey hands down.

As for tuning and fixing your car. You are taking it to the right person. The only person I can think of in Portland that does excellent tuning is Ralph at ground zero, but Ralph does not know Microtech yet. Hopefully some day he will.

Good luck, your a good person and I wish you the best luck with your new tuner etc...

Keep us up to date

He has tuned my car Icemastr. Gary does not work for Atkins Rotary anymore. Gary is a very personalable person, easy to work with, and he wont quick till he gets your car right.

He is also one of those people that if something messes up he doesnt ignore you or try to pass the problem on to someone else. Your in good hands Don.

Speaking of Hayes, Mike (Mike has a few bays in a garage and rebuilds motors, or side sources the Atkins motors, along with installs and fixing 253-209-0698, call him he is the man) and I just meet someone with a moteago blue FD at Hayes and towed it off. He was feed up with the crap Hayes was giving him and they had used or misplaced his new (brand new) rotor housing. On a side note one of my other buddies (ApexRX) had sent three Jspec motors from a Jspec distributor to Hayes for a TII conversion. The motors were all guarantied to start, pulled from working cars. When Hayes received them they were all bad. This was ok with the distributor the first two times but after the third engine everybody was feed up. My buddy stopped the project and is looking into other ideas/ways. I think Hayes ended up with two good T2 motors and turbos while the just lied to my buddy.

Good Luck

The big turn off for me was when I was looking to buy my current FC, I was trying to find a place to give it a once-over inspection and do a compression check to make sure the thing wouldn't die on me after I bought it (I've owned a lemon or two). I live in Redmond and like to wander around and managed to come up on Hayes over on Willows, wrote down their number, and called them the next day. They wanted $150 for the original inspection with an extra fee for the compression check which he never told me what it would be and when I asked directly he avoided the question which I thought was very odd. Ahwell, go with your gut instinct (at the time I didn't know about this forum) and I avoided them. If anyone wants to know, I ended up calling Mr. Jim Shive of KarChek who was very thorough and seemed excited to see another rotary on the road; I'd recommend him if you're looking for a knowedgeable inspection.

I have another car to take if it aint done in time, thanks.
Ground Zero and torque freaks don't tune Microtech. Which is funny because I went to the Cork Sport BBQ in 2003 and I saw a few Microtechs. I don't know which is true either Hayes are blatant rip offs or they are totally incompetent.

going through all the stuff they stripped off my N/A motor, im just idenitfying parts and everything looks right except wait! where is the lower intake manifold? oh wait it is not there. so down to hayes i go. Don quells my anxiety by saying,. oh we have a bucnch of those..... but none of them are here. oh ok so when can i get one? whenever you need one.. umm ok. all i can think of is, right now. but of course they arent there so once again im at the mercy of hayes. its too bad they have taken advantage of so many people.. which im still confused as to wheather im one or not cause i dont see any motivation for them other than labor costs. for me atleast. i think hayes could go far if they stopped and realized they have the market cornered in this area and they are just pissing off good customers by screwing them.

Finding a good shop is getting more and more difficult every day. Unfortunately, our cars are to inexpensive to command high maintenance costs, so the best mechanics wind up moving up to more "elite" cars and garages. I've been to several garages at the recommendation of friends/family and often the first visit is great and subsequent visits suck. If I found a garage that was consistent and convenient, I'd do less myself. Unfortunately, if you want it done right, take the time and do it yourself. It may take a hell of a lot longer, but there are fewer questions as to what really happened.

The sprint will not make it that far and plus I would be mad ashamed/embarrassed to drive that piece to ABF.

Thanks for the offer I may have to take you up on that.

Joe

i got no complaints so far with my atkins built motor... as for the whole area i dunno... i know mark at mt peak is one of the most upstanding mechanics i know, and i know he wouldn't screw anyone around... i'd drive my car the whole 1.5-2 hours it takes to get it to him... tho i'd fix it myself if it needed towing heh...

Is Mark still in the rotary business, too busy, or is he just being selective about the projects he takes on? I've tried calling several times and PM'd him without a response.
I was very happy with the previous work he had done for me, and since there are so few decent places left I'm not sure where to take my new baby after I get her back on the road.
