Automatic And Manual Transmissions

Do automatic transmissions have the same bolting pattern as a manual one? A friend is going to be buying an rx7 with an automatic and he will be wanting to swap in a manual.

same bolt pattern but if your putting it in a manual car, you will have to install the manuals flywheel and front counterweight i belive.

Yeah, best thing to really do for a auto to manual swap is to just buy a car that has a manual transmission, but blown motor/bad body/interior whathave you but the tranny/etc is ok then do the swap, that way you will have everything.
Somewhat of a writeup is here
http://rotaryresurrection.com/rotary...er/5speed.html
but if ya do an advanced search for "auto to manual" and confine it to the 2nd gen sections there is alot of info there.

Also have to remember about the gearing like is says on that site, an auto->5sp will be faster, but with poorer acceleration. Another side note, some people race with auto trannies due do the gearing differences, an auto can be in first while the 5sp has to have shifted a few times. Its all really about preference, most people just don't like autos, but when cared for and learned they can be just as viable (and better for ET drag racing as well).

just makeshure that when u buy the parts car that its a s4 if u have a s4 or a s5 if its a s5 because the flywheels are different. the s4 weighs more and is bollenced a little differently. if u do mismach the flywheels it will cause bearing wear. im doing a auto to 5-speed conversion right now and i made that mistake : ( so i still need to find me a s5 flywheel. good luck!

i did this swap and it was really easy, the only hard part was putting the clutch pedal in because you have no room, i had to take my seat out. and your going to have to bypass the saftey swith which is easy if you find the hot wire in the steering colomn and hook up a tag along wire that goes down to the starter. i have pics. another thing is that the gearing up to fourth is pretty much the same (only a few mph difference) but fouth and fifth are super long, if its a healthy motor you can burry the speedo cause i did and it was sick. if you have questions id be happy to answer them.
