12a half-bridgeport project underway!
Ok, so, im sitting here on my *** on a tuesday night and i finally got started on my 12a half-bridgeport project for my '84 GSL. I just picked up the 12a motor from the corner of a garage. I got it free from a friends' brother's girlfriend's dad, which was pulled from an FB to be replaced with a J-spec 12a (not 12at
). So, after hauling the motor back to my house, me and my friend pulled it out of the back of his pickup with a cherry-picker, which is where the motor currently is. The engine has been steam cleaned and has had a few things pulled off of it right now, but is pretty much down to the carburetor, intake and exhaust manifolds, and block. Ok, i know what you may be thinking right about now "big deal!" Well, this is a HUGE deal to me and ive got BIG plans for this motor.
PLANS FOR THIS SPRING BREAK ARE AS FOLLOWS:
1. Tear down and clean motor
2. Half-bridgeport housings
3. Rebuild/paint motor
4. Pull current 12a from 84' GSL (147,- - - miles)
5. Clean engine bay while motor is out
6. Build RB headers to custom 2.5" exhaust
7. Install rebuilt/half-bridgeported 12a
8. HOPE THAT MY CAR IS FAAAAST!
I plan on updating this thread and posting pics to go along with the updates...

no...i was PLANNING on selling my car after this project...so i was only testing the waters in the for sale section...but since my parents dont wanna co-sign for me to get a loan to buy a t2...cuz i have no credit to get a loan on my own...this is gonna be a keeper for a while...
it totally wasnt my decision...i still plan on getting a t2 someday...i just get really tired of always having to work on my car...maybe this will make it more reliable...(the holley 600 will be a better fit on a ported engine

^lol, he must have hit up that bump thread a bunch!
only 2 of the 4 iron surfaces are bridgeported, so you don't have to buy one piece apex seals. It's the poor mans bridgeport. I can't wait to see this engine (mostly hear it) run. Should be fun, sounds like you need to come pick up my broke carless *** from moscow bro. Bring me out!
i got thursday off, so let me know

So what is a 12a half bridegport
A half-bridgeport, my uninformed friend, is when you bridgeport only 2 of the 4 intake ports on the housings. This is so you can use 2 piece apex seals but still get a lot more power out of the engine without having to use 1 piece seals. If you are REALLY interested in knowing...go to www.nopistons.com and search on it...they have an AMAZING forum for porting.

ASLO!
THE FLYWHEEL WILL NOT COME OFF! ive tried EVERYTHING (except a flywheel puller of course). Hammers, crowbars, nothing will get this f*ckin thing off. Anybody have any good ideas other than having to run my *** into town to get a flywheel puller?

might try some heat, torch the sucker a bit
mine was a ******* pain too, and i was using a puller, i actually stripped two sets of bolts on the puller trying to get that sucker off,
and before it ends up breaking your foot, make sure you thread the nut back on a little bit to prevent the flywheel from popping off and doing some damage to you.

Finally got the flywheel off...here are some pics as of just before i got the flywheel off...also just before it started pouring down rain:

Planning on disassembling block tomorrow, weather permitting, and starting porting!!!

12a fully disassembled...cleaning begins!
Everything went really well as far as disassembling the engine goes. I ran into little trouble. The only small thing that worries me is that on both rotor housings there is an area where the chrome has come off (as shown in pics). This, however, is not a big deal to me, because i have two very good rotor housings which i pulled from another engine.

What would cause the chrome to come off on the sides like it did on BOTH of the housings?

Thats the thing that got me, this was supposedly a low mileage engine, and i do believe it is, because everything else seems in VERY good condition. The apex seals looked normal from what i could tell.
