1 engine, exhaust, and coil set later

Hey everyone! Finally got the 8 up and running, here are some pics of the racing beat exhaust install:
https://picasaweb.google.com/1027403...eat=directlink

Plus the engine went belly up, coolant leaking into the rotor housing. Took it in and 1 week later voila! New engine! Plus there are new coils in there, new entire clutch assembly and some other bits and bobs. It sounds like a space ship when it runs now, so cool. Next step is to clean up the outside and finally put my massive wing on I can even make it to the next meet!

Haha I guess this is the 3rd engine this car has burned through. I'm hoping the other fixes (improved water pump, coils and exhaust) we did should take care of this new engine so it doesn't have to be replaced!

Wow, I am glad we had that discussion at Izzy's then. Does the clutch feel any different now?

The clutch is super loose, I slammed it to the floor the first time I got back in after the new clutch got put in. I can tell the difference in driving though, glad we got replaced. Got a P0420 code right after the new engine went in, suspect the O2 sensors got fouled maybe when all the coolant was pouring out the exhaust?

I cant believe how much trouble you guys have been through since you got this Rx8. Stay with it, the car can only get better from here. If anything else gives you trouble just take it over to Jesus house so he can have a stern talk with it lol.

I know!!! There's nothing else that could go wrong now except it spontaneously combusting *knock on wood*

So we also may or may not have traded in the celica for a 2010 370z roadster....

Retighten your gas cap.

Isn't that for the P0455/6 codes? Heck I'll try it anyway though

I'm thinking I may have to replace the stinkin brand new O2 sensors in there, just need to get under and check it out on the next sunny day. It may blow up by then though

Hey I'm finally learning something about cars haha

So you know what, now that I think about it I'm pretty sure the dealer screwed up. Before I took it in and it had all that coolant dumping through the exhaust (for only a couple days mind you, maybe 3 start ups) I wasn't getting the P0420 code, all the O2 sensors and exhaust were peachy keen. Right after the new engine gets dropped in I get the code and I noticed some new rattling around the transmission.

I'm pretty sure they messed something up because it wasn't throwing that code before when the major issue was going on. I also gave it a few days for any leftover coolant to "burn off" and cleared the code; it came right back after a day and half. Suspiciously it was a day and half after I got it back from the dealer is when it went on the first time.

I'm going to call them first thing in the morning, just afraid they will want to charge me even though it was their mistake. *insert long rant about horrible Olympia dealer* This will be the second time their incompetence has screwed up my car

I'm running out of money and patience to deal with these people, but I can't just garage the car until mid july which is when any spare time comes in. It's unfortunately a needed daily driver

Any advice?

Potential bad/clogged cat? Maybe the o2 sensor is actually doing its job. Could explain the rattle around the tranny area, and the catalyst inefficiency code. The fact that you were dumping coolant into the exhaust probably didn't help matters, or maybe even caused it.

Its a nice excuse to add a midpipe too.

The Cat is brand spanking new, like two weeks old. Even with the coolant dumping through there for only a couple days it shouldn't have ruined it. However knowing my luck it probably did.

I swear I'm going to sell that car when the CEL goes off

You know, worst case and the cat is bad I think I'm just going to stick a straight pipe in there and call it good. Then probably either sell the car or run it into the ground. *sigh*

Ha, so it was a bad cat. The one in there was too small and couldn't handle the load. Not too happy about it, never buying a davesport catalyst again. It came with BHR's midpipe so probably gonna toss the midpipe as well maybe get racing beat's one.

Now I have to pursue warranty fun on the cat, hopefully get money back I don't really want another cheap catalyst like that.

So that was BHR's midpipe/cat combo? How odd. I wouldnt use anything other than an OEM cat, or a catless midpipe. BHR's catless midpipe is supposed to be pretty good. I've been personally going back and forth as to if I should get the BHR midpipe or the racing beat one.

So what happened to the OEM cat? The emissions warranty on the car is much bigger than the bumper to bumper warranty.

The cat had already been replaced a couple times before I found out, it just kept melting down with the OEM one. Plus the warranty is out with the OEM. I suspect it's because the idiot who owned it before me didn't replace the coils like he should have. So we looked at BHR's, got pretty good reviews and decided to go with it because it was cheaper than racing beat's midpipe w/ a cat. Unfortunately it couldn't handle the load and the cat in there just fried itself.

After some further research it seems the cat that goes in BHR's pipe has a 50/50 of working or not. Some people it's amazing and they race with it no problem while others have my same problem.

Thankfully BHR is being very helpful and nice, which saves me from wanting to scrap my car

Update, BHR has been kind enough to send a free replacement Still doubtful on what caused the fail in the first place but the first step is to get the new one on.

It's highly doubtful that coolant going into the exhaust caused it, since it was for such a short distance and time, even the BHR guy agrees. Having the coils tested to make sure they are running ok.

However I seem to have freak luck with this car so maybe a gremlin crawled in, threw a rave party and forgot to clean up after he left. It seems the most likely explanation so far.

I found your problem. You have a catalytic converter on there, lol. Check your coil pack. When ever something goes wrong, I always check the newest thing I installed. Plus Autozone and O' Reilly's checks them for free.
