sunday i got pulled over coming home from the dalles after a weekend of drill. still in my uniform i get pulled over just outside hood river. the cops pulled me over for not having a front plate and i tell him dmv never gave me one b/c i dont a place for it on my car. so he asks for my papers and i give them to him and i realize i dont have proof on insurance with me.
i tell him this and that i know there is insurance on the car. he ends up calling geico and to both of our surprise there isnt insurance on my car. this being news to me i explain that i was a way at basic and when i came back i told my dad to put my car back on the insurance. well he called me a liar and said that "just b/c times are hard doesnt give you the right to lie. " note im still in my army uniform.
i tell him i wasnt lying and that not being insured was news to me.
"if you hadn't of lied and just said that you didnt have insurance i would have just written you a ticket and let you go, but now im going to tow you car. consider yourself lucky im not taking you to jail for lying to an officer"
.... .... .....
i called geico and before he got back to with a ticket i reached out my window and handed him my phone
"here, its geico. i have insurance on my car now. would you like to talk to them?"
he stated that it was because i've been driving around w/o that he's giving me a ticket and tells me once again how lucky i am to not be arrested, and hands me a ticket for $248.
and as he walks to his car he says "good luck and have a nice day."
to which i yell
"today i feel like my country is betraying me!" (mainly b/c he called e a liar when i wasn't)
so on monday my girlfriend and i had to drive to hood river found out there that the police station that i have to go to is in The Dalles, so we head to the dalles. upon getting there we find out that even though the ticket says cash is ok; its not. and that i have to go to the post office to get a money order.
so we drive back into town drive around till we find the post office, drive back get the paper work done and ask where my car is.
its 15 miles south of hood river....WTF!!!
so we made that drive... and paid $230 to get my car and drove home just in time to make that last 15 mins of my class.
SO! run down of damages- $248 ticket that i have to pay at the end of the month
$40 processing fee i had to pay to the police station
$ 230 to the tow truck company for taking my car.
WTF!!!!!
oh and to make things worst when i got my car back i looked in the back seat...found my old wallet with a valid insurance card in it. if i just had of looked back there NONE of this would have happened....
so thats been the day today....

SSSSOOOOOOO F-ing lame man, seriously. I would have fought tooth and nail over getting it impounded. There was no right for him to do so when you showed it was insured, in fact the ticket shouldnt have even stood up in court!
I got pulled a while back for "loose license plate light buld connection" and found my card was expired and i got a ticket, the cop was going to impound it but i parked it where it would be ok and told him i would get insurance on it before it was moved and that i will walk home. He told me that if it was insured before the date on the ticket they will drop the charge and that he would have no right to tow it if i can show it was insured before the truck takes it away. So i would imagine that if you were insured before he even handed you the ticket, hes in the wrong... But IMO i think hes just a ******* dick. Then again i hated living in the dalles and HR when i did for these exact reasons!
Best of luck getting through the BS!

times are hard and cops are handing out more tickets then warnings these days. it's their little way of securing their jobs and making the state more money. leaving us with less money in our pockets and higher insurance rates. it sucks.

It must be something they feed the cops in the Dalles area. LOL! Back when I had my 79 and was using it to move to the terrebonne/Bend area from Tacoma in the winter. (now that was fun) I got a ticket making both trips, and both times it was in that area. I still remember what an *** the cop was then. LOL Good luck.
Damn man! That sucks.
I've had the same thing happen with insurance with me however. THAT sucked.
Let me know how things are going otherwise, shoot me a message sometime.

Yeah, that sucks. but I'm gonna have to say good job on the cops part for ticketing you regardless who you are. I'm not a millitary hater, but we all have the same laws and rules as people. but I still feel for you, getting your car towed is always a pain in the ***. I don't even like the you must have insurance laws, I've delt with an insurance company on a few occations. why must you have uninsured moterist coverage? I've also had a car towed for no insurance. But I was in the wrong for not having it. but it was 2 am and I was commuting from work. new car new job. cost me 400 dollars to get a car I paid 350 for.... but I got insurance that day and the ticket got droped. I just had to still pay the towing, and release fees.

You don't need a lawyer! Just get a signed letter from your insurance company stating when your insurance coverage was reinstated. That, in itself would COMPLETELY negate the ticket. YES.... your suppose to carry PROOF of insurance. Not having a valid insurance card does warrent a ticket, of which would be dropped once proof of being insured the whole time was submitted.
Also, the police agency should be responsable for reimbursing any impound fees related to their citation if they're proven in the wrong. Just my 2 cents.
What a bunch of BS!!!

I agree with bearzah, those impound fee's are not afordable. and should be waved with proof that it was wrong. I got towed one other time for no insurance, and the car was insured. just not in my name witch is BS, the good news is it was my uncle in the tow truck who droped it off a few blocks away for me, I just had to pay 20 bucks to the courts, to have them release it. The loss of 20 bucks sucked, but was really not so bad, considering what I thought was going to happen when he said I'm towing it.
the thing is they know if your insured or not, by running the plates. Your suppose to have DMV notifyed by the insurance company. and the cops will pull you over for no insurance if its not on the DMV computer.

could not have been said any better!
this front plate stuff is garbage.
5 months ago im taking pictures at tcc around 9 or 10. there is a bar across the street. there are people fighting outside the bar. as i go to pull out i notice a cop about a half a block down in a parking lot (in full veiw of the bar fight going on) as i pull out a mustang pulls out of the bar and does a full fledged burnout down the street smoke and all.
i pull out and do 30 past the cop. he pulls out behind me and flips on the lights. i ash my cig out the window as he does this. when he pulls me over i had to ask why i was being pulled. he said throwing flaming debris out the window and no front plate. i tell him im not going to drill holes in my front bumper for a license plate. i get a littering ticket no front plate and no insurance ticket.
wtf.

FC's have provisions for a front plate... there are two bolt holes in the bottom side of the front bumper. bolt on two L brakcets, and the plate floats in front of the bumper.
