Mazda RX-7 1983 - 1985
Description:

Working transmission pulled from car that was autcrossed until the motor expired and came to me as a roller without engine as a spare chassis. I don’t need the transmission, so would like to see it go to an RX7 enthusiast. The Amsoil S2K 75w90 gear lube fluid was completely drained for transport and showed no wear, it shifts nicely in all gears. The transmission was visually inspected with no defects. The bell housing has no cracks and the mating surface is flat and unmarred , it comes with OEM cross brace with rubber mount, OEM shift rod,  original shifter ****, shifter boot and rubber boot for the throw out lever. The front seal and tail seal are in good shape and cannot be the originals, recommend replacing the throw out bearing and shaft needle roller bearing. The trans has no broken tabs, missing bolts and does not leak at the cases and covers. It is very clean and has only some rust on the throw out bearing outer shell, and has been stored previously and currently in a garage. This trans is clean enough for a concourse car after a little removal of the typical grime inside the bell housing.

I prefer local pick up in Northern California and am in Napa Valley but will consider shipment with an empty trans as the end is capped and the front shaft bagged tightly with the fluid in a separate container, but buyer would have to pay all shipping charges to include cost of wooden framing or plastic trans shipping box.

I carefully removed the transmission per the factory manual using a transmission jack to make sure not to put undue stress on the seals and shafts.

The shift rod has some grab marks on it that where there when I purchased it, but does not cause the shift **** to hang up and threads on easily, all other threads are 100% original form.

See photos! Thanks for your interest. (Price is firm and I don’t need any more parts/trade. PayPal is accepted.)

transmission weight without fluid and all parts is 88 lbs without the transmission mount cross member but estimate another 10 lbs of wood to protect the transmission for shipment with cover over input shat and bell housing and bracing along the sides to the rear in a rectangular wood box with solid ends and long horizontal panels to protect the top, bottom and sides. Should be less than 100 lbs total including sealed trans fluid 1 gallon container. Thanks!

Taking Offers

I am asking $500 but will entertain offers, to include shipment of local pick up interest is not there at this time. Also will be selling interior parts not needed for a race car and will list those in Spring. Thanks!

Interested in buying

Hey my name is Garrett I’m a 17 year old out of Kansas and I’m doing a 13b swap on my 85 rx7. I’m pretty damn interested since I can’t find transmissions anywhere but I just had a few questions like what year rx7 you pulled it from and if you know the mileage. I also need to do some research to see how much I would have to pay to ship it

Shipping to Kansas

Hi, I pulled the transmission from a car with 1983 VIN tag but can’t be certain it is the original as no one can unless they where the original owner given these cars age. There is no meta transmission tag or cast numbers that I have seen or know of but am not an rotary expert. So I understand the transmissions were not that different within the first generation as far as being able to mount it and fit, but confirm with your sources and references.

The transmission would be 38” long 20” wide and 18” high in a wooden crate and weigh about an estimated 100 lbs , so you can research the shipment costs to your zip
code from my zip code of 94558.

These transmissions are very hard to find not only in your state but all
across the US and I have a buyer in Puerto Rico requesting sea shipment.

Let me know soon what u want to do as it has seen a lot of interest just recently.

Thanks, Cliff

Mileage

The car has 140k miles on the odometer but this transmission feels far smoother than it being the original without some services since then and shows sign of newer throughout bearing, so am guessing it probably has about 80k or was driven not harshly.

Rx7 trans

Ok I’ve done some research and it seems like it should work. Would I be able to get your number so we can discuss this further.

Shipment to Kansas

Hi, Normally, I could take a call but the world is crazier now and due to the Ukrainian Invasion I am working OT now at the airbase and often out of range, so I can more reliably answer questions on email or IM here.

I will have to build a wooden crate for the transmission to be shipped as Frieght, so that will be an additional cost and not sure how long it will take but not long to build a box for it- though wood has become expensive here in California due to the demand after all the fires and rebuilding. I have some others interested so need to know how serious you are about buying the transmission. Do you have
PayPal or Venmo? I think it’s a great project for a 17 year old and myself I rebuilt a 12 cylinder Jaguar in auto shop as my crowning achievement. Thanks

I went to local shopping specialists and they said it would be $178 insured to a residential address wirh an adult signature required, insured for $600. and $167. to a business address via UPS ground ina wooden crate so would have to build and emailed all this info you asked for but even though I registered my email your EarthLink account blocked the email. So let me know if you are serious as I have others interested. Thx

Fyi-

I emailed gcumbie@mindspring after registering my email address as his email set up requires it. But never got a response and recently tried again but my email was blocked. So not sure if the Club member is on here to collect email addresses to seek to spammers or if he doesn’t understand that it’s an expected courtesy to respond that you received the information you asked for but are no longer interested, because I put in time to to research Frieght shipment to a rural address only to find that an adult must sign for shipment upon receipt and the requestor was 17.

Hopefully, if his interest on this Club is real he has found the parts he needs and is busy wrenching like the rest of us!

Is this still available? I'll take it for $400 + the cost to ship it to 98006.

Sorry for delay in responding , I have been busy taking care of my 90 year old dad who broke his hip and have sold the 5spd to a guy in Colorado for $500 to use on a crazy rock climber project! Best of luck on your project! Thx
