is it worth a rebuild

hey i just bought a 86 rx-7 with the 13b NA. The guy i bought if from said the same thing that would be a head gasket on a V8 is what went out. so im guessing it was one of the housing gaskets there the motor sandwiches together. i got the motor out and draind the milkshake out of it all the water in the oil. i made sure the motor has compression and i does. now i looked around on racing beat.com and found a gasket kit for $230 so no main oil seals or apex seals just a basic gasket kit. any though on if it is worth putting a new gasket set on it or should i buy a used motor. money is kinda an issue so any help as to what i shoul do would be appriceated. as the story goes the guy was driving it when it started to overheat he drove it home and when he parked and shut it off i guess oil and water dumped from the bottem and it has been sitting there ever since untill i found it.

Well, I'm no expert so I may get corrected, but if he overheated the engine, it sounds like you just bought a rolling FC chassis...

Once the housings overheat, the aluminum ones warp...once that happens, your coolant seal is toast and the stuff dumps in the engine...game over.

Check the vendors board for prices or hit the 3rdgen classifieds for the engine prices.

you never replace just "some parts" on a rotary
because of the way its put together, its not like a headgasket on a piston engine, when everything is apart its best to replace everything. As well, overheating will toast more than just one seal so you really need to pull everything apart and start over with new seals.

engines

just for a heads up i live in canada and have dealt with osaka jdm , in my opinion i think you will get better service from engine land inc for another engine if you need one.

Talk to Naj. He is a cool guy, I just bought my FD from him in fact and no one as far as the JDM dealers from montreal are nicer and more accomedating then him.
I have dealt with Jdmmontreal ( Hard to deal with even just on the phone) Jdmskyline ( horrible service and will sell you a car that got wrecked on the way over from the boat, bought a skyline mistakely from them.) Ended up buying my second Skyline from a private owner.

I am in your position.

However, i do have a running, freshly rebuilt a few 1000 miles ago na 13b.....

My Se has some kind of motor issue going on with it that i wont know until i get it out of the car. I'm thinking i tear it apart, check tollerances and if everything is in good order and passes inspection there will be a f/s thread in the buy/sell/trade section VERY soon.

Turbo II. Dooeeet. Technically, you'll be paying the same amount of money rebuilding your na vs buying a factory boosted low mileage COMPLETE engine.

It's not hard. Hard is pushing a car out of weeds up hill with four flat tires only to bring it home and slam your head on the hood for how much work you just caused yourself because you refuse to buy a car that's "already done" and get off on doing the work yourself. Hard is having an addiction there is no rehab for. If you have no money, you'll find a way to feed your addiction anyway if you are truley an addict. Hard is facing your girl after you bring not one, but two shitpile rx7's home in the driveway when the car you got rid of for said rx7's was perfectly driveable and was a paint session away from being a cool car.

Holy rant/runon batman.

Do the turbo II swap. Seriously. The more and more i read up on this, the more i think it's worth it. If you like boost and enjoy the modulation of a turbocharger system then go for it. I hope your rx7 isn't your only car though. If it is, get another car first. Like a honda or a geo....something cheap and reliable.
