Whole new clutch

welcome to the board.
unfortunately, a clutch is a wear item and it's wear is mostly dependent on the driver. at almost 70 miles, it's kind of hard to say because if you (or previous owners) "ride" the clutch a little more than it needs for smooth engagement, then it will wear faster.
the $2100 seems a bit excessive to me though. was that the dealership? I've never done one on a Gen III, but i can't see charging someone THAT much in good conscience. i mean, i know it's too late, but in the future, look around.

Re: the clutch...what he said^. Sounds like someone either drove the car hard, or had bad habits. Where I live it seems like parts always seem to be ~ 50% of the total bill....with labor being the other half. So guessing parts were around $1000? I hope you got new gear oil, a clutch fork, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing and rear transmission seal....possibly even a flywheel re-surface. IMO, those should be part of any routine clutch replacement.
A side-note...profile says you have an FD. It's helpful if you put that in your signature so we don't have to check each time.

I got it done at Rapid Transmissions in Escondido, CA. They were recommended to me, but not by a Mazda owner. Thanks for your comments!

As mentioned above clutch life is depended on the driver. I have seen clutches exploded in 10k miles because someone had a bad judgment call kind of moment. And I have never replaced a clutch on a Gen 3 before, but $2100 seems a bit steep, I hope they did a fantastic job. The last cutch I replaced on my S5 I also added a light weight flywheel, new OEM pressure plate, and a one piece driveshaft and that’s about the only way that kind of a price makes since.
