White smoke and cold start ups

I bought a rx7 1987 n/a 161 original miles and for one it was really cold about 9 -10 pm at night I tryed to start it and it wouldn't turn over and so I stopped (wasn't trying to flood it or ruin it cause i don't know much about rotarys) next morning started up just fine no problem but there was a lot of white smoke for like 4 - 7 min coming from the exhaust but stops after? What can this mean? Did I just buy a car with a broken coolant seal or broken apex seal ?

its fine when its real cold and right at the first start/cold engine. also if you can see steam coming out the exhaust and the engine is warmed up, then check if you can also see your breath. if you can see your breath its ok.

Doesn't sound like something you should worry about keep an eye on your gauges and if it seems to run fine then your all good buddy

If the smoke is white and does it everytime you start it plus overheat then you blew the coolant seals but it doesn't sound like that. Higher mileage rotary engines usually have worn side seals on each rotor and when the engine is cold oil slowly seeps past them then when the engine is started it burns it off and that's where the smoke comes from until the engine is warmed up and the seals expand and seal the area the smoke will stop but like I said before if the smoke keeps continuously coming out of the exhaust even when fully warmed up then your side seals are shot. It also could just be unburnt fuel in the exhaust if the last time you drove the car you didn't let the car warm up and then shut it off. The engine will flood and you need to deflood it. If you gotta deflood it on an S4 pull the EGI fuse and lower spark plugs and crank the engine for 5 secs a few times then clean the plugs, put a small amount of oil into the lower spark plug holes, put the fuse and plugs in and it should start. S5 just floor the pedal with the car off then stop and try to start it. Usually works. Also could use a fuel cut defenser. You need to learn rotaries just read boy

theres a bunch of ways to identify a blown coolant seal. the biggest is the volcanic eruption of coolant out the rad cap when idling cold with the cap off.

this doesnt really sound like that

Worn side seals result in low compression and usually oil with fuel dilution in my experience. But not smoke.

Yes, there is...

To the OP:
What you're likely seeing is condensation within the exhaust being expelled as steam as the system heats up. Unless it's really cold, it usually stops after a few minutes after it's dry.
Coolant being consumed with the combustion event (as from a failed coolant seal) will also appear as steam out the tailpipe, but it will have a distinct, slightly sweet odor....and almost always accompanied by other symptoms (see link above).

No overheating just does lil grey smoke. Im thinking that's the oil . And the last time I started it it did die cause of the faulty battery like right after it kicked over. Its running fine if not great just a lil puffs from cold starts and thats it

Sgt.Blue I made a mistake I know worn or blown side seals results in low compression and oil being mixed with fuel. I actually meant the oil control rings not side deals, my fault.

N00bAtEverything did you cheak to make sure that the wire is hooked up to the sensor? It only slides on and clips in place and can fall off once in awhile especially if you were working in that area. The sensor is near where the fuel lines go into the hard lines, kinda near the oil filter.

As far as I see everything looks right but no picture or diagram for the exact wire just to make sure it's not like cut off and tucked

Just saying cause the guy I got it from seemed fishy and didn't mention alot like that it had no oil (figured that out when I got not a block away) and small stuff like that .

Wow, no oil at all? Sounds like he was trying to have you blow the engine on the way home. I just bought an Escort GT a town over from where I live and I drove it home (with no brakes) and I kept hearing a slight pinging noise so when I got home I checked the oil level and it was bone dry. That really got me mad, the guy really couldn't tell me he drained the oil? I would've brought some with me if I knew that and luckily I didn't blow the engine or he'd have refunded me the money. I will look for a picture of the wire on the sensor so you can see exactly what I'm talking about.

Right ? If I woulda found that out on the freeway I woulda been pissed . But luckly it just so happen I decided to check the oil when I put some gas in (I hardly ever check while pumping gas) and it was like a literally drop on the dipstick of oil. Lucky me the gas station had a carquest next door. And thank you for the picture ! Much appreciated . I also found out that he took the a/c as i found the all the components to put it back behind my seat in the glove boxes

You bought a car and didn't check the oil?
Apparently you don't check oil level any more often than he did....so why would he have refunded you the money? Caveat Emptor

Good thing that you checked it or bad things would have resulted from it. One thing you should get in the habit of is checking your oil level often on your 7. It burns oil by design.

I didn't explain the whole story for the sake of not blowing up someone else thread with a bad experience of mine but since I can see you are taking it as I'm some sort of dumbass I'll explain. I went to look at the Escort on a Sunday. No notaries open on a Sunday around here so we scheduled the title transfer and everything for the following Saturday. During the week he drained the oil out of the car and didn't even tell me. So that Saturday I went to pick the car up, thinking it still had the oil in it from the week before, and started to drive it home. That's when I started hearing the pinging and that is why if the engine would've blown he would've refunded me the money for the car. Make sense now?
