Whine from rear of fd when lifting off

Hi all. My wife's 96 3rd gen fd manual is suffering from a couple of problems.
The least is that whenever you liftoff after firm acceleration you can hear a noticeable whine that sounds like its coming from the rear of the car. The whine only lasts for less than a second but I have not been able to locate its source. Starting to think the fuel pump may have issues. Anyone experienced this?

The second problem only occurs after the car has been driven and is warm and has been parked for 10 minutes to a couple of hours and you try to drive it again it won't accelerate above about 3000 rpm. You have to stop for 10 min or so and try again. May have to do this 2 or 3 times before it runs normally. Have had several garages try to fix this, but they all say there is no problem.

Any help, advice appreciated.
Thanks

On the whine, if you let off and decelerate "firmly" for no longer than a second the diff is probably it. Check by decelerating longer in that case. Other than that it could be that when you let off the injectors shut off (as they should) which causes a spike in fuel pressure and you hear the whine. Once it starts recirculating at a high rate the pressure goes back to normal and whine goes away. It may not be a big deal if the fuel pump only occasionally makes a noise. Not really related but I have a noisy aftermarket pump on my 260z and when at a light with the blinker on, the pump whines in rhythm with the blinker related to the voltage drop. Its kinda funny.

Hope it's not the diff. May pay to check that it still has oil in it, but no leaks are obvious. The fuel pump is original and never just to make much noise expect primping when ignition first turned on. Is there anyway of testing the pump, or do they tend to just keep going until one day they just stop?
