where to start been sitting awhile.

Okay so I have an 83 gsl with a 12a it was running when it was parked in 2005 except it needed a starter I was told. Anyway I wanna see about getting her back on her feet. Problem is I'm not 100% sure where to start it was garaged up till 08 then it went outside where it sits now sadly because I don't have a empty garage for it. Anyway I've pulled the battery and some of the busted up items right side headlight assembly accuator motor arm and mount. I pulled the wiper pump and cannister, the radiator has a busted weld on it on the upper right side so I'm gonna pull it next. Put outside of draining the oil and radiator and replacing the starter and cleaning the fuel tank what else should I do before I try and crank it? To see exactly what I'm working with.

welcome to the board.

put some oil down the throttle bores and turn the engine by hand through a few full revolutions.

Thanks, I haven't had anymore time to work on her. Sure hoping she runs at least enough to justify moving her. I'm moving 900 miles at the end of May an I told my wife she would be running even if she wasn't fully driveable. So that's our deal anyway.

Smart.. Alot easier to get running than it is to make it fully drivable.

I sure thought so cause I'm on limited time and budget. An I have a huge list of upgrades. This particular model has the cali smog package on it I was debating on leaving it or trying to pull it anyone have any advice? It sure is a lot of hoses and mess under the hood with it on there. But it does have all the stickers and the vin shows it had that package???

Remove the spark plugs , disconnect power from your coils or ground sparkplugs to chassis , remove fuse from fuel pump , put some oil into the combustion chamber ,check engine oil level and then swing engine until you have oil presser , replace plugs add fuel and she well run

Okay so I've pulled the fuel tank shot all the lines out I blew a couple up theyan were just totally rotted out. So I've got 95% of them replaced I replaced the fuel filter waiting on my tank to come back I punched a tiny hole in it somehow. An even though I have the tools to fianx it I just didn't feel safe welding on the fuel tank. I replaced the starter I've got the radiator pulled and rewelded. Ll

its a special solder you have to use to patch a gas tank not a welder. there not very thick and you can easily ruin it if you dont know what your doing. just saying...

carb could sue a rebuild as well im sure.

Yea, I knew I couldn't patch it but the guy I took it too is known for things like that around here. He usually builds custom fuel tanks but he said it wasn't a big deal. I get it back Monday. I've been thinking about the carb too. It's an old demon and I can't find a rebuild kit for it. Noone say they make it. Been hunting ebay and everywhere with no luck. I hate to replace it not sure I have the money in the budget for a new one. I had to have the radiator flushed and when it was done it was pretty bad. Someone had used several radiator stop leak treaments apperantly. So I'm having it rebuild cause I wanna go back as close to stock look as possible. Even though it has several upgrades on it. I've been wonderfing

Oops-- I was saying I've been wondering about changing the coils over to MSD? I've read a lot about some of you guys have trouble with them an others love them? So I'm still up in the air on that one. Also wondering about all this smog stuff still, should I keep it or trash it? I know its a big power killer.... anyway lots of questions still and not many answers I guess. My real problem area I don't know much about is suspension and I haven't touched it yet. But I'm sure it all has to go its been sitting on all 4 for several yrs now.

I have that same idea ^ I just got a 87 rx7 that has not been used in over 3 years. And the guy flooded the engine so I need to try and get it working. 13b fuel injected

I wouldn't worry about anything else other than starting it up right now.
Seriously why spend money on a suspension and other Bling when the car will not run!
Get it started up first and make sure the engine is good.
After that it is all Gravy!

No right now the #1 thing is getting it running. I fully agree, just thoughts running through my head as far as future plans for suspension and such. My next step is replacing the plugs and wires adding some oil to the plug holes an cleaning the fuel tank
