Hey, so first of all I did use the search function (I searched "titles only" with the keywords "slicktop," "hardtop," and "hard top.") However, I am still not 100% sure what the weight difference is between a slicktop FD and a FD with a sunroof. Also, is the difference in rigidity remarkable? Would someone primarily interested in road racing/auto X be better off with a slicktop or is the difference in rigidity/weight negligible?

I ask because I know there can sometimes be a big difference between slicktops and other types of roofs - for example, the 300ZX slicktop is 300lbs lighter than the t-top model and noticably more rigid.

Considering that this is a discussion that hasn't happened yet on this site (specificaly whether a hardtop FD is more desirable than a sunroof one and if so how much) I think the topic is worthy of a bump.

 

The touring model is about 60 lbs heavier than the R models, not sure about the weight difference for a base model. Sunroof models are probably less ridged, but not sure if it is noticeable.

 

The difference in weight between the R/Base models and the Touring/PEP models isn't just due to the sun-roof. I've never seen any figures on it, but since none of the sunroofs were motorized, I think the weight is negligible. Maybe a couple pounds more for the glass panel.

As for which is more desirable for track/autocross, I've never heard of anyone mentioning any cowl shake or difference in rigidity because of the sunroof. But it's much easier to fit a helmet under the NON-sunroof equipped cars for anyone over ~5'10".
Remember the 'R' models were geared a bit more for track use, coming WITHOUT things like BOSE stereo, rear window wipers and sunroof...and coming WITH dual oil coolers, front shock tower brace and even faux-suede seats rather than the slick leather.

 

Can't be that much different, if you are overweight you'll make up for the lost weight lol jokes

I never considered the weight difference, but if someone wanted to race that might affect their choice if I resell the car. I have a sunroof.

 

Ya I'm 5/10 with an R model and have decent headroom, although I've been in FD's with sunroofs that had aftermarket seats that are lower and that helps with headroom and steering wheel clearance for my legs.
