VA Voltage problem?

After a hockey game, I sat in the car for like 5 minutes to warm it up and while the engine was runing, I noticed a change on RPM's but it recovere to what I know as "normal" in my FD95. Inmediately, the lights on the instrument cluster and gauges went brighter than usual and all the warning lights were on as well with no audible alarm. (add coolant, oil and volts) This happened while I was driving:

1. Stopped at the red light and the head lights dimmed.
2. The cluster and gauges dimmed.
3.The "volts" light disappeared, but the oil and add coolant light remained on.

I drove 5 miles like that and made it home. Pulled out my multimeter , measured the battery voltage and the reading was 16.4. I know the alternator or voltage regulator is involved here. Im going to start with the alternator. If there are any recomendations, please dont hesitate. Im kind of lost past the alternator part. Thanks. Joe (Tango Smash)

If your battery is testing 16.4 that would be a couple volts over average so your alternator must be working I would suspect the regulator is your problem or a poor ground somewhere in the system .....do a output test and see what you come up .. It shouldn't cost much to take it somewhere to have it tested if you don't have the stuff to do the test with .. Does your battery have lots of turning power or is the starter dragging..

if ur getting 16.4v at the bat, the regulator in the alt has gone out and it's overcharging the bat. voltage output shouldn't be much over 14v. cost me $65 at a local place that rebuilds alts and starters when mine did that.

VA Voltage Problem Solved!

Thank you guys for the recomendations. I went ahead and bought a new alternator right away and installed it. Im new in town and really dont know the alternator reapair shop yet. That would 've save me a few bucks.Checked the voltage again and the reading was 14.77 v. Everything is back to normal.
