BC Vacuum Modulator failure?

Has anyone had the Vacuum Modulator fail on a 1st generation (automatic) car? My 1985 throws out a lot of smoke when coming off decelleration (like, when taking off after stopping for a signal light).

It seems to be thirsty for ATF; but its not on my garage floor. Any ideas or experience with this problem?

Thanks,

John

Well, waddaya know.... I disconnected and plugged the line to my vacuum modulator and ALL of my car's "smoking" problems went away.

If you have an automatic RX, it sure might be worth checking to see if this vacuum line contains trans fluid. Mine sure did and from what I've been reading it sure isn't supposed to.

Now, getting it to shift without the modulator is another matter. :-)
I'll have to track a new one down somewhere. Any ideas (other than the dealer?)

Congrats on your diagnosis! This is likely a dealer only part but since one trans can be used on several different models from different car manufacturers, I would try calling, NAPA, Advance, etc. before unjustly enriching Mazda. Come to think of it, I heard that Mazda stopped support of 1st gen parts several years ago. You may be stuck with salvage yard parts. If the parts stores don't have it you could try Mazdatrix and see if they list one.

Hey, CP. I found a modulator at the wrecker (a whole 6 bucks) and the car shifts like a dream with no engine smoke. Actually, the oil is staying nice and clean and starts right up on cold mornings (it's a 12A).

The car is a bit of a dog, though. I have to stand on it to keep up with my wife's X-trail, even when she's not trying. but once you get it going, it's OK. Just, well, kinda pokey. I wonder if the 12A automatics all like that? But it sure is a blast to drive once it's moving!
