Thumbs up Upholstery work?

Hey all,

My brother has a VW GTI that he got a couple weeks ago. He bought the car as is, and its not bad for a 17 year old kid. But the thing I really like about it is his upholstery. the guy before him did a cool job on this, and I kind of want to do it to my FD. Here's what it looks like;

My question is, any tips or advice for this? i'm gunna try to do a blue plaid. thanks in advance!

Looks like it is just glued on with contact adhesive. Buy a can of said adhesive, read instructions, and then go nuts. Obviously you would want to dry fit your material first. Gluing on some THIN foam first makes it more luxurious and smooths out the plastic. Overlap about 1/2" onto the backside and make sure it is thoroughly glued. You'll need to work the corners slowly and make plenty of relief cuts on the back to get smooth edges.

Really, blue plaid?

Brush-on adhesive is also used, but spray-on is the easiest to work with. Do a lot of test fitting, and make sure not to cover your attachment points.

IIRC there is a thread in the Interior Section somewhere about this. I believe there is a product called 3M 90 or similar that is an adhesive or adhesive promoter that people raved about. I may be absolutely incorrect as I'm going from memory.

awesome, appreciate the help im gunna look more into it. and yeah, im thinking blue plaid, well blue checkered type thing i mean. Like where the purple is on his, will be blue on mine. I'm doing a build on my '93 FD, and changing the exterior color to the STi Blue, and doing blue sparco seats and 3 points on interior, so i figure, why not make it stand out some, be a bit original?
