unknown noise under dash

i have an 88 rx7 turbo. last little while i am getting random shut offs of the engine. for no reason it just dies. now when i try to restart it, i get a solenoid type clicking noise coming from under the drivers side of the dash.(almost sounds like a starter trying to turn over with a dead battery). slowly getting worse and worse. usually happens mostly when it rains out and less in better weather(seems that way anyway).
its not a dead battery. turns over fine when it runs good.
any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

if it helps. i can hit the rear defogger with the lights on and it will die. i can turn a corner and it will die. even if im accelerating, it can just die. ill wait a min or 2, turn it over and drive away. totally random. may happen 5 imes on a 10 min journey to the store or i can travel a few hours and upon returning home to my driveway, close my power window and boom...dead.
im kinda lost

thanks for some suggestions
