Tune up needed

Hi everyone,

I just bought an 86 GXL. It has only 34,000 original miles on it. I tested the compression on the rotors and they hit aroun 80-90, so no bad seals. I am going to be dail driving her and wanted ask a couple things.

1: Should a 60k tune be performed?
2:if not then just a regular tune up will be fine?
3:Where can I buy everything that I need for a tune up?

Thanks

Very low mileage there.

a 60k tune is usually something bmw people talk about. It isn't really applicable to us. Perform maintenance on a regular schedule. Oil every 3k miles (fuel dilution in rotaries will dilute oil too much for higher intervals), spark plugs every 10-15k, fuel filter every 15-30k etc. Check the 2nd gen FAQ thread for more info.

I tend to get my stock parts from Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda (fuel filter, oil filters, bushings, water pumps, coolant hoses etc). He owns RX7s and offers us discounted parts. I also buy from RX7.com

Thanks for the info gracer7-rx7.

I brought up the 60k tune only because I read it in the 2nd gen FAQs:

I just got my car and I want to make it faster, what are the first modifications I should do?Do a full 60K tune up, replacing all the fluids (including brake, clutch, tranny, engine oil, coolant, and rear end lube), spark plugs and cables, all filters (including fuel, oil and air), belts, any hoses that are leaking or bulging, and the O2 sensor. In addition if the car is more than 10 years old or has more than 120K miles on it, the Pulsation Dampener (or pimary fuel rail and integrated Pulsation Dampener on 89-91 FCs) should be also replaced.

I wasn't sure if this is really required. I am going to perform a regular tune up, just wasnt sure about a full 60k.

Yep, even a oil change will make a noticeable difference to your fc.

I was lookign around and thought about ordering the Idemitsu oil from rx7.com. I wanted to know what the difference was between the premix and the 10w-30.

For the rest of the fluids (tranny, rear diff, etc.) what do you guys use or suggest?

Thanks in advance!!

OK. I understand the reference to 60k now. Given the age of the car at this point, it would be advisable to change all of that stuff since those are the main wear/maintenance items on the car and will keep it reliable.

As for your questions on oil, I probably wouldn't bother with Idemetsu or synthetic if you don't drive much. Fuel dilution will kill the oil before the longer oil change interval of the synthetic oil. Get some Valvoline VR1 racing in 10W30 or 20W50 and order a Mazda oil filter from Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda or RX7.com

Pre-mix is used to replace or enhance the function of the oil metering pump. If you are running the stock OMP, you don't *need* pre mix. Some people add some for track days or autox but not really needed for day to day use if your OMP is working. Search on pre-mix or refer to the FAQ for more info on that topic. I know the 3rd gen FAQ has some good links on this topic.

Thanks for the help. I'll be changing all of the fluids soon.

I forgot to mention that I will be driving her daily, if that changes anything.

Thanks!

as for your question about trans and diff fluid, i'd recomend Redline MT-90 for the trans and Redline 75w-90 for the rear end. Reasons why i would use these is as follows: MT-90 is a GL4 based oil meaning it doesn't contain the additives that are harmful to the bronze syncros in out transmissions, and Redline's 75w-90 is also GL4 based and it already contains the limited slip additive if your car is an lsd car.

just my .02
