IA trouble shooting first gen 12a need help

i have owned a 1982 rx7 for about three years now. been able to maintain and keep running till now need some tech help. car runs at an idle and will run down the road for about five to ten minutes then it putters and stalls. i have rebuild the carb, new fuel pump and filter, the five vacuum controls on top have been changed, new spark plugs, cap, rotor, wires and still the car just putters and surges like it not getting any fuel. only does this going down the road runs fine at idle and am able to rev up just not drive or it falls on its face. Can any one help?

The next time it begins to stumble and die, shut the motor off and coast to the side of the road. Then, look into the little windows on the front and back of the carb to determine the level of fuel. These are supposed to be half full, but I'm betting you will find them empty.

If they do turn out to be empty, or very low, then you are most likely sucking up some debris in the gas tank. This will clog the intake pipe, and then the motor starves for fuel. When you shut the car off, this relieves the suction holding the debris against the pickup tube and it floats away until next time.

Anyway, based on your description, that is my guess.

I had an 84 that did the same thing. I was able to fix the problem by replacing the fuel pump because it wasn't putting out enough psi or flow and I replaced the main issue which was the stock fuel pressure regulator. If you need help finding it just let me know. The fuel pressure reg. wasn't working right. When i replaced the pump the floats where over flowing and flooding the carb. I would first get a fuel pressure kit and check your pressure. I'm not sure off the top of my head what the psi is I can look it up if need be though.

Jokerrx7, did you end up fixing this problem?

I have the same exact problem with my 84 GS. Runs fairly good at idle once it warms up. I can drive it for about 10-15mins down the road. Then it bucks and sputters like it's starving for fuel. After that it will cut out about 30 seconds and stall if the pedal is pushed too hard.

I punched out the the Cats because I noticed the exhaust getting extremely hot while just idling and assumed it was creating an increase of pressure build up in the exhaust. It seemed to have fixed the hot exhaust problem, but not the starvation of fuel.

Also I noticed when I fill the fuel tank up it overflows. I guess the vent line is plugged? Could be related to my problem..

I will try to check the float bowls when it happens next time.

Sorry for this late reply.
My fuel pressure is good. I did a flow test into a bucket and measured the amount after 1 minute. I can't remember what the numbers are, but it was within spec.

I ended up taking my gas tank out and found rust and debris in the tank. I cleaned it out as best I could and use electrolysis to remove most of the rust.
removed the carb. air horn, replaced the needle valves and seats? in the float bowls. ( I think this was the problem). I cleaned the internal filters located inside the seats and removed the metal filters inside the banjo bolts. (One was damaged and the other wasn't looking so good.
Ended up placing an inline fuel filter directly before the carburetor to help keep fine debris out.
