Transmission ?'s

Im lookin to buy an 85 Gsl in excellent shape from a guy i work with. Car is only $400! However the car has a bad tranny (possibly just needs installed right) I read on another site that 92 and previous miata and B2200 tranny are the same thing. Any truth to this? Recommendations?

Honestly easiest way is to put in another rx-7 trans. As far as miata and B2200 trans - the simple answer is yes and no. The complicated answer is just that - complicated. Thats why I said easiest way is to swap in another 1st gen (or even 2nd gen) trans. 2nd gens trans is relatively easy, just need to swap tailshafts and you're good.

ok sounds good to me, the other website made it sound as if it were a direct bolt in. good thing is local junk yard has about 5 first gen cars. And with second gen that excludes the turbo model correct?

Either/or. Here's how the 2nd gen or a different series 1st gen trans go:

Clutch goes with the trans, flywheel goes for the engine. Best bet for you is to find a good trans out of a 83-85 car. If you go with a different year, you will need a different clutch. Thats OK if you need one anyways.

Correct. The 2nd gen turbo tranny, clutch, starter, driveshaft, diff and halfshafts are different. The following links will lead you to the online FSMs and other rotary related reading. Read, read, read and enjoy. Welcome to the forum.
