ok, im looking into purchasing an 82' RX7 in Brisbane Australia.

from speaking to the guy he has recently upgraded the tires and told me the car runs 197HP (which he had tested).

From reading up on this i figure the engine must have been replaced as in 82' mazda wasnt running Rotary's that powerful. He also said it doesnt contain any form of turbo, and has a manual transmission.

He is asking $9k for the car.

basically i have 3 questions.

1) what motor would you suggest it is running? from memory he mentioned a "Mazda Sport" something

2) I'm thinking of working it down to about $7000-$8000AUD, is this a decent price taking into account spare parts and servicing?

3) i'm also young, and as comes with the territory am trying out a lot of things in the cars im driving, has anyone personally used these cars for drifting, and if so do the rotary engines effect anything as far as you can tell during such activities?

Cheers, David

Of course, drifting...I don't know anything about that as I'm a grown up.

Its hard to say what engine he is running as there are so many options. Most likely it is a 13B with a large street port or a bridgeport. It's difficult to get to those power levels without some kind of aggressive porting, but it has been done.

$8000 sounds like a lot of money. I mean, a lot of money. Unless the car is absolutely perfect in every way shape or form, that's almost twice what you should be paying.

If that 197 is rwhp, ask him for a dyno sheet printout. Get some pics of the engine bay, post them, and ask the owner what all was done to the engine. He may have said MazSport, which is a well known rotary perfomance shop in Austraila.

To achieve that high of hp on an NA engine, it takes some radical porting that usually isn't street freindly to drive with an extremely loud exhaust.

Granted, rotary prices can be 2-3 times higher in AU than they are in the US, but the car would need to be in mint condition for that kind of money. You have a very good rotary forum in AU, ausrotary.com I'd ask about the car there. Chances are someone knows it.

In my sig line are links to the online FSMs along with other rotary related reading, enjoy.
