too much fuel, not enough spark?

So I have a 1988 rx7 that I JUST GOT. I test drove it, ran great, pulled back into the guy's yard (who is a certified mechanic) shut it down, and did paperwork. went back to drive it home, cranked over and nothing. wouldn't fire up. so we pulled the plugs and found that there was no spark. changed the fuse for the ignition and now have some spark but it just floods itself every time we try to turn it over. we try to clear it, but before it gets a chance to start it floods right out again. this is very frustrating and the deal is on hold till we figure out whats wrong. anyone have any ideas?
