Assuming you don’t drive it in the winter I found this—-> https://www.lucasclassictires.com/185-70R13_c246.htm

Probably some other sources too using terms like “vintage tires”or “classic tires”.

But you’re right, my first thought was TireRack but they still only show one ‘performance tire in that size.

those pirellis look great, but a little steep for my budget, I found a bunch of options on ebay, but yeah I'd love to go to 14" but not sure of what would fit in the wheelwells and would need to buy new wheels too

Well, you asked for recommendations....and given the size those are a bit pricey. But then the size is also obsolete.
I would only want to imagine going highway speeds on a hot summer day with a set of eBay tires.
And you can get a set of all-seasons from Tire Rack for ~ $60 per. Awesome tire for a minivan, not so much for a sports car. But I think they would at least have some screening for non-Chinese knock-off quality and warranty.

thanks for the suggestions, I went with cheap tires from walmart.com(radar rpx 900)just to get the car rolling, mostly because I live in a small town and probably would have to go there anyway to get them mounted. this way I can get them serviced in any town in the U.S. under warranty. but I would like to explore the possibility of getting bigger wheels/tires, just not sure about what the options are for that, or how to go about it

You might check the 1st Gen. FAQ for wheel size info. If you have the narrow steel wheels, a set of good used OEM cast wheels from a later FB might be the way to go. I think they were the same bolt pattern.

The cheap tires are good enough to get the car on the road and operational. If you want the best handling and grip, you'll have to switch to a better tire, but for now they will be just fine.
